Huge Meteor strikes Russia

^ err, those rocks in space travel at 100's of km per second irrespective of their size.
Look at this video of the asteroid 2012 DA14. Its around the size of a swimming pool. Look at the distance it covers in one second. Then imagine the speed at which its going. If something like that was on a direct collision towards earth, it would wipe out an entire city the size of mumbai in seconds.

Well, So what do we do on earth ? wait & watch for some thing like this coming & destroy earth ?

Its time humans invest in such technology rather then other useless stuff.

you dont understand. the fastest man made missile built is the Bramhos which can fly at just mach 3 max. These tiny itty bitty meteors fly towards earth at more than mach 50. they can easily wipe out the missile and still have some speed left on them to do enough damage on earth. plus breaking up in the atmosphere with a bang is even more deadlier than say slamming into the ground since in air the area of impact is wider. if nuclear missile is used, there is even greater risk of nuclear contamination in some parts of globe. wind in upper atmosphere will always spread nuclear waste where ever it goes at high speeds. even trying to make something fly at those mach 50+ speeds is not possible with todays technology.

its time people grew up and learnt that not everything can be controlled by man. forget space, humans cant predict volcanoes, earthquakes, or cyclones on earth. these three combined take more lives than a meteor would. risk of a very large meteor hitting earth is practically nill. plus look at all the pollution companies spread everywhere poisoning the environment. in the name of progress the only place habitable in the whole galaxy is being destroyed. its not like one fine day we can just buy a ticket to some other planet and leave once earth becomes inhabitable.

I read somewhere that the Russian meteor was moving towards the earth in such a way that the sun was behind it. That made it impossible to spot via telescopes.

Its other way round actually. Telescopes dont monitor the sky during the daylight. And moreover NASA says that a meteor of this size is considered very small compared to the other large asteroids out there. So practically it becomes impossible to track them when they are far away and as they travel at very high speeds. There were several reasons involved as to why this meteor wasnt caught by our telescopes. As 6pack has already said above, humans have limitations. No one can stop Mother Nature.

I heard somewhere that scientists are already working on a LASER that can melt n vaporize the small n medium size meteors on the way & will save the Earth from further destruction !!;
Hope they achieve this soon, else some big meteor from backside of Sun will come n vanish the entire humanity :bleh:

If the foreign object possesses a danger to human beings in a particular area, then that area can be vacated in time , thus saving lots of lives.
NASA & other such things - Monitor such things, Identify if it impacts or not, If Yes then do what :) ?

Poor human race..

NASA & bla bla spends tonnes of money on sending somethng to sky but there is no solution which can blast such rocks in space before it enters earth.

we have bruce willis for that.

I am pretty sure Meteors(and chuck norris) are not part of mother nature.

the fastest missile ever built is not the brahmos, its the russian Topol RS 12 icbm, which hits 14 mach.we will never really fly anything at those speeds within our atmosphere, the friction would be too insane.the saturn v hit mach 32 when it was on the very fringes of our atmosphere when it ran its 3rd stage rocket for about 6 minutes.its interesting to note the very fastest thing we ever made, was the helios 2 that reached speeds of mach 205 while orbiting the sun.

what you are proly talking about is the hypothesis involving a probe and a laser that might save earth from destruction.basically we will send a probe armed with a laser towards the said assteroid, this laser will chip away at a particular point on the assteroid, hopefully opening a gas pocket, the small force generated by the escaping gas should be enough to change the course of the assteroid and let it safely pass the earth.what you are talking about is quite simply impossible for now and the distant future, the energy required for the operation of such a big ass laser is simply not present, plus the whole apparatus would generate heat we might simply not be able to dissipate with current techniques(not without occupying a few city blocks at least).moreover the effects of such heat on the local atmosphere would be devastating, producing unpredictable changes.(production of plasma, and what have you).

Just read today, A person developing Paint kind of material which will be sprayed on asteroid & it will heat up due to sun & will change direction. NASA is tieing up with this guy.

NASA is pulling out of most costly space missions & allowing private companies to explore. Two guys working on it. Virgin Airlines founder working on space program & another planning to send people to Mars. People laughed at him but now they accept him after two of his vehicles got attached to international space station.
