im still confused about why he really wants an i3/i5 series cpu... his purpose can be well served by C2Ds or even DCs or athlon/phenom IIs ..why waste money for new and overpriced platform??!!

Wow.Really sad to see how people behave when they're at the receiving end of something. If you don't agree with something either give a reasonable reply or walk away. Why would it bother you how much I justify something if you're not interested in this thread?...

First of all, you're totally entitled to your opinions and so are we. I do believe my response was a legitimate reply. Posting old analysis and saying the comments are new are like, wow :hap2:! You made your points and so did we. What's sad about that?

If there's tons of apps executing at the same time, the quad would win. This happens all the time on a server which is a natural use for multi-cores.

On a desktop it would depend on usage. I'm 50-50 on this, maybe you've adapted to getting more work done so it would perhaps be common for all cores to be relatively busy.

Chez Naga rarely has any free slots then :D

I personally have 4 systems (outside of my office and my netbook) which I use at home now and then. One's an Athlon 64 3000+, a X2 4400++ DC, a C2D E6750 and a Quad extreme. I've got an Archos, iPod 5G 80GB, iPhone 16 GB and a HTC TP2 in the house. + an HTPC. Lest this post starts sounding as a show off, I mentioned all the systems to point out I'm using all the single/ dual/ quad systems in real time and so my opinions are not based on old memories or old web articles. The PMPs and the phones to point out the multiple formats I need my media for. Diff for the iPod, the iPhone etc.

I use office apps a lot, music is a compulsion and transcoding/ encoding videos are the lot of my life. Since I sell and service computer systems, it's not unheard of a background virus scan/ data recovery going on in the background. Did I mention I also edit my own home videos? As you can see, I need lots of processing power. Not 24/7, but I believe you would agree that my CPU cycles hardly ever go waste (WCG/Folding@Home are always there when I'm just listening to music and browsing).

The last two paras will tell you why I like more cores :ohyeah:! Now why I think more cores are relevant to someone who has the money has been posted earlier by myself and others too.

But ad nauseam for the OP...

It's not uncommon for a home to have different multimedia phones/ players so encoding (OP likes to point out that mostly video encoding benefits) is not just for the pros. Low load multi-tasking (antivirus+OS+music+browser) is very common. They're not going to be impossible on a single or a dual core, but the experience is going to be much better on a quad.

Note I haven't mentioned any benchmarks anytime. Benchmarks are just that, benchmarks. Real life situations will and do call for situations like mine. Also note, I've never said or implied that one should bust a nut for a quad. If you don't want/can't afford to spend, go for the best in your budget (DC/QC). But don't expect others or try to convince others that quad cores are a waste. Cos in my opinion they are not. And it's also my opinion that you're just trying to justify your thoughts. But it's just an opinion. You neither have to conform or be saddened that I don't agree with you.

P.S. I do believe this has been one of the my longest posts ever. Must be due to the late night refreshments :P and the way you have discounted my thoughts with a flame bait comment. My apologies to others on TE who had to suffer this lengthy post to a thread which I earlier mentioned as pointless :P!

Though on the flip side, if the user is absolute sure of himself, and has awareness about how processors work and render multi image, they are free to choose a dual core -- as the OP here is.
Don't think Arun1 mentioned what kind of apps he will use with the dual core ?

That's the key isn't it. His whole premise is based on this.

And a well written one as well :)

If you have lots of video to do, of course you need all the CPU you can get :ohyeah:

Huh where ?

ironically he is buying i5 670... which has total 4threads over 2cores...

so virtually he is trying to get a quad threaded cpu...which is the case with all other quad core cpus anyways... (phenom2's and core2's)

@arun1
you should phone or mail intel and amd right now and order them to instantly stop manufacturing quad proccys. and give them your own opinions/explanations too that there r no apps for quad and what not. Send them the links u referred.

Then i guess they might think they hv lately (i can say this now;)) realized that they have made a mess of technology so soon than later.:P
