I am in need of help... Windows XP reboots automatically.

nac

Level F
I dont know why system restarts after using it for around 5 or 6 hours. If i attempt to work, it keeps on restarting not even going to login screen. I dont know the exact cause.
If i turn it off for some time and resume my work it works fine.

I am guessing like this...

Because it heats up and started rebooting... It gets heated up because..
Its summer, its too hot here in chennai or
Its two year old system, or
I am loading too much of application simultaneously and HDD is full or
Some problem in power supply or
Something else which i dont know. Can you guys please help me in this regard.???

Please... I am looking forward to hear a good solution from you guys..

try to operate with left side case panel removed (so more air gets in for cooling,if any).
check ram modules & clean them.if problem persists check with another module.

these problems may arise due to.

1.faulty ram sticks/slots
2.faulty SMPS
3.Mainboard issues too.

if problem continues check each one by step by step ,for any further help post your comments here. Also please note that many boards will switch off automatically if the temp:is high via the cpu/board thermal sensor,So random restarts are not directly connected with higher temps !!!

if you are suspicious, check the Temperature from BIOS. you will know

I can't check BIOS when system started rebooting. I can check now, but what's in it checking temperature while system is running well. But I will do it, what's the ideal temperature? @ what temperature system will start rebooting....

Did mean dusting? If yes, I did it yesterday night. Let see whether I am facing that issue today...

How can I identify or check that the problem is with RAM or SMPS or MAINBOARD? (I can able identify if the bulb is fuse) But here how I can do it? Please help...

to check for RAM problem, you need another RAM( try the same type from your friends PC for testing)

also if RAM problem doesent fixes, check SMPS (also by connecting another one).and finally board too.

in my context it may be the RAM sticks (i think so).

Only can be confirmed by checking all the above by step by step only).

^ I will do it. I can try and get RAM stick. But I don't think I would get SMPS. Since I can't check them in few minutes. I have to wait for another 5 to 6 hours. Let see...

How can I check board???

Its most likely a ram issue than a temp one because of the time involved but can be either of the two.

Try to boot up without any ram sticks and see if you get the error beeps or not. Alternatively try using you ram in other computer and see it the ram work and if they do try a memtest on them.

first of all post your system temperature.

Is this possible to check my system temperature while I am working. Or the only way to check is in BIOS??

what brand of psu and ram do u have ?.

I am not sure about the watts...
It came with the zebronics cabinet (pleasant). I guess watts is 400w.

I have 1GB transcend 800 RAM

What if I hear error beeps?
What if I don't hear error beeps?

I don't think I can use it in any other system. Even If I can, I don't think I can wait for 6 hours to know the result. I have heard about memory testing. How to do it?

I don't know how to check temperature while I am working. So I shut down my PC for around 45 minutes after using 5 hours from morning.
Then I booted my system and ran memory test with MEMTEST86 V2.11. (I have used it and got the CD too, but I couldn't recall this when I asked about memory test.)
It took approx. 18 minutes and came clean.
There is no error... - I think this says there is no problem with RAM. (Am I right?)

Then again restarted and entered boot setup by pressing DEL. After using my system for around 25 minutes (after done with MEMTEST) I checked temperature in BIOS, it was 34.5 C but it soon shoot up to 35.5 C/95.5 F with CPU fan speed of 2860RPM. I left the system alone and did nothing for another 5 minutes, temperature came down to 34.5 C.
I rebooted my system again and this I have scheduled disk checking before turning off my system last time. Now my system running disk check for all the five drives and rebooted and again I entered BIOS to check temperature now the temperature is 40.5 C and soon shoot up to 44.5 C/111 with CPU fan speed of 3260 RPM. Temperature steadied there for a while and down to 44 C and gone up to 45.
I rebooted, now system started rebooting automatically and keeps on rebooting. I turned off for half an hour and I am working now.

Can anybody able to come to a conclusion and found the problem with my PC. Please read it slowly to understand this. And tell me what's the problem now with my system.

The one thing you asked me to do is removing RAM and check the beep sound. I will do that and let you guys know about the beep sound.

From where exactly that cyclic reboot loop starts? If before windows boot slider logo, then the problem could be due to hardware conflicts (Most probably motherboard). If during or after that boot slider image(This is 75% software issue) Clean reinstall of OS might be useful in both scenario.

Yeah I am gonna do install OS freshly in few days... Not because of this, I planned to do it, already.

Did anyone understood the post #12 and found a solution or where the problem is?

Now I have borrowed 256MB RAM from my friend to check RAM now. Its DDR 1 RAM. Does it matter, because I am using DDR 2. And more over, should I do this? Since MEMTEST have shown there is no error. Why should I check RAM by replacing it?

It doesn't start rebooting when I start my computer. It starts after I am using it for around 5 or 6 hours sometimes after 8 hours. It happened for the first time three days ago. Second time day before yesterday. And I post this thread, after that once. Totally this happened thrice.

I can say out of 10 times, 6 or 7 times it restarts when MS WINDOWS XP logo appears. Few times even before that.

Both scenario indicates software and hardware problem or

during or after boot slider image???

@nac : sorry for my ignorance, im not gonna spend time reading previous posts if u are able to reach the desktop or not....but if u can......

start > run > eventvwr.msc > ok > event viewer opens.

system > right click > save log file as > save it

application > right click > save log file as > save it

save them for ur reference.....

and now in the system category > sort by date on the right hand side and look for events red in color.....double click to open > and read the description there to know......and post it here

Edit : :O are u running on on-board network adapter or pci slotted ? or do u have a dial up modem ?

"There is no items to show in this view" - this is what I get under SYSTEM category. What does it mean here? - There is no problem with my hardware?

You can check your system temp through your bios or from windows itself, for windows try speedfan.

Download link

Thank you for the link. I am posting that snapshot here, you can take the reference. First image is taken after 40 min from system start. Second image taken after 40 min from the first image.

Try to run the computer on full load i.e. 100% cpu. Then see the difference in the temp. Any application like a video converter soft or any other can be used to achieve this. if the temp rises above 60 deg for any component then exit the app immediately. Run it for 10 to 15 min at least. Post the images of the temp difference.

I don't think I can do this. I don't know what I am gonna get to know from this. Even when I am using normally, my HDD temp shoots up to 50 C. I guess, I never run my system with full load. The max would be around 60% load.
