Guy's im planning an upgrade, I will be getting cpu, mobo and ram new everything else will be from my Sig rig. I will be using this system for gaming...so suggest should i upgrade to i5/i7 if yes then what should i be buying ?

If time is not a constraint, do wait for the newer Ivy Bridge CPU's which will be launched in ~ 2 months.

Also, you will need to specify a budget for the same.

Please mention your budget for the components you want to buy.

30-40k

@vivek: yeah i can wait. but if i can get a list of parts listed now for my budget(best price performance) i can use it to compare later.

Core i7 2600k -19.8k

mobo

since you are using a physx card too , you should get a z68 mobo with atleast 2 pci e slots depends upon personal preference .

Ram

8gb(dual channel for better performance) if you have windows 64 bit

4gb if you have 32 bit

Nice suggestion bud. Can we change something on proccy side ? more price v/s performance wise ? i heard that i5-2500k and i7-2600k can be almost equal performance wise ? only the i7 has ht which we generally turn off crossing the 4ghz mark ?

Well, for now would recommend going for i5 2500k + Z68 full ATX mobo with 2 full 16x PCIe slots [though, probably, they will run at x8] + 8GB [2x4GB] RAM.

If you could wait for the Core i5 3XXX, then would suggest to go for the equivalents of the same, just ensure that it has the HD4000 IGP ideally, and the mobo should be based on the Z77 chipset, similar as above. The greatest advantage that you will have is that being on a smaller platform [32 --> 22 nm], the overclocking potential is higher.

There is not much difference if you compare i5 to i7-http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/287?vs=288,if you're referring to the gaming performance then there's no point comparing cpu performance gaming is nowadays gpu powered.

And i got gpu covered with a Hd6970 + 8800gt(physx) So last question how much of a performance gain i see on 1920*1080 between Q9450 (3.8ghz) v/s i5-2500k(4ghz ) ??? This will decide if i will upgrade or not

nope..i use my i7 2600k at 5.3 ghz for benching with HT. its stable. so plz clear ur misconception first. also most 2600k can OC slightly higher than 2500k. Howver for gaming only, you are better off with 2500k or 2550k

Regarding performance improvement with a 2500k over q9450 @ 4ghz using a HD 6970, well, these are the following games which will benefit greatly from the switch:

1. Far Cry 2

2. Battlefield BC 2

3. Battlefield 3

4. Crysis 2

5. Arkham CIty

6. Civ 5

7. Anno

8. SC Conviction

9. LA Noire

10. Resident Evil 5

11. GTA IV

12. Metro 2033

Yeah , you are right gaming wise no difference between 2500k and 2600k (we are looking at 1-2%)

so just get 2500k and oc the heck out of it !

Yes, you would see a nice boost in minimum framerates which will make your gaming more enjoyable .

Also HT tech.is not availed by today's games , so pointless to get 2600k and just save remaining money for IB platform . Skip the first generation and get the second generation one , 2500k will easily hold till then .
