ICANN has published the list of new gTLDs that have been applied for. A cursory glance reveals that.app was pretty popular with 13 applications. Now begins the seven month objection period (but you have to be a large organization to lodge any).There were 1930 applications for new domains . 84 of those are "community-based", with the rest being standard applications. One hundred and sixteen applications involve non-Latin scripts.
The geographic breakdown of applications is:

• 911 from North America;
• 675 from Europe;
• 303 the Asia Pacific;
• 24 from Latin America and the Caribbean; and
• 17 from Africa.

Greedy Google spends $18.7 million for random domain names
Greedy Google spends $18.7 million for random domain names | Firstpost

The fight for the coolest domain names has begun with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Named and Numbers (ICANN) receiving 1,930 proposal for new suffixes. From ‘.pizza’ to ‘.space’ bidding for the new domain system range from bizarre to just greedy.
So who’s the greediest of the lot? Well according to aNew York Times, Google has spent a whopping $18.7 million trying to get its hands on nearly 100 domain names.
So what all does Google want? The report says,
.google, .youtube, .goog and .plus. It was the only applicant vying for .fly, .new and .eat. But it is going to have to fight Johnson & Johnson for .baby, Microsoft for .docs and .live, and Amazon for 17 top-level domains: .wow, .search, .shop, .drive, .free, .game, .mail, .map, .movie, .music, .play, .shop, .show, .spot, .store, .talk and .you.
Imagine google.baby:baby: or google.eat:happy44:

ICANN domain bids include .Indians, .Statebank in the list | Firstpost
leading Indian names in the domain-name land-grab that is going on. From Bharti Airtel Limited for .airtel to State Bank of India for .statebank the list wasn’t exactly long. Here are the names of Indian companies and the bids they applied for:
• Bharti Enterprises (Holding) Private Limited for .bharti
• Dabur India Limited for .dabur
• Housing Development Finance Corporation Limited (HDFC) for .hdfc
• HDFC Bank Limited for .hdfcbank
.Indians sounds like a bizarre domain but it seems logical to bid for whatever seems up for grabs as the party has just begun. You can view the entire list here.
Other choices that reveal the madness of the bidding sytem include .baby which got eight bids, and .tennis which got four bids. Web, Website and VIP were also part of the list. Its obvious the smart ones are not leaving anything to chance and registering for everything that’s possible.
