I am planning to buy a cell phone from France and research indicates that it does have a IMEI number but its not registered and I may face problem using in India.

I am thinking of trying my Indian SIM in that cell phone before buying and see if I get an error or I get signal and make calls.
Is method of checking fine, or is there a possibility that the Indian SIM will work in France without error but will give error of IMEI when I use it in India?

Please reply ASAP!
Also, I found something called Universal SIM unlock. Will this help in the IMEI error message, or is it just for those carrier-locked phones like in US?

We can think this as -

I go to China, buy a Chinese mobile phone. Test the mobile phone with a Indian SIM card. If the mobile phone works fine in China, will it work fine in India too with the same SIM i.e without any IMEI problem or anything?

Not sure, but I remember reading that you could purchase and IMEI number for your phone or something, this was around the time when there was talk about banning chinese phones that had no IMEI number, try checking with Airtel/whatever customer care

I can confirm that if ur phone does not have an IMEI number, any service provider in india will disconnect the connection after some time...

I have heard some chatter about people changing the IEMI number on the phones... But have not seen it done anywhere so I canoot confirm that...

Do one thing... Go to a store and tell them that u want to purchase a cell and in some time will be going to india for a brief period of couple of months and would wnat to use the cell there locally and just ask them about the IEMI number... That way ur problem will be solved.... Vodafone UK did it for my friend... They unlocked the phone for him and gave it to him.... So u can ask if they can register the IEMI number or do something about it and also tell them that in INDIA phones cannot be used w/o IEMI numbers

What if I take my Indian SIM there and try it with the phone? If I get signal/call/sms, it will work there but my question is that does mean that the same SIM with the same phone will work fine in India too or is that not necessary?

See dude the incident of the connection getting disconnected happened after using the cell for 15days... So just poping the sim in the phone and trying might just work at that instant but after u come back and use regularly then it might not work...

Why dont u take the sim and when u go to the store ask them about ur problem if they have some kind of solution than get that implemented and buy the phone... It is better than spending some money and gettin it here and than it going to waste....

^ Yup, I will ask the dealer. But the problem is if he says that it will work in India and when I get back to India, it doesn't.
