Hello everyone,

I'm planning my first PC build soon with a Ryzen 5 5600 and I'm planning on getting some parts from USA/Japan. I've got some relatives coming from each of those countries in December and I was hoping to get some parts as they are usually cheaper there than they are in India. My total budget for the build is around 75-80k (will share specs soon, having some stock availability issues) and the most expensive item will probably be the 6700XT for around 350-400$, or the 6600XT for 300$ if I have budget constraints, again, specs aren't finalized yet hence giving a ballpark estimate.

What are some things I should look out for when getting said parts to avoid any hassle during transit and (avoid) customs?

Thanks a lot!

PS: Please let me know if this isn't the proper section to post this. Thanks.

Warranty will most likely be an issue with most parts as most companies don't have international warranty. Plus, if the parts are dead on arrival you'll need to send it back to the US/Japan.

Also please note that the prices mentioned in the US are without taxes. Check the prices there after adding the taxes (which is different for different areas in the country). If the price is very similar, just buy it here and avoid future headaches.

If you really want to go by this route, ask them to open/unseal the box beforehand. Skip buying bigger components like motherboard there. Try to keep the total value of the parts as low as possible.

I don't think you'll be able to avoid customs on computer parts, they are incredibly well known, so you'll most likely get 44-77% customs on the complete price (price + taxes+ shipping).

You can avoid it if you don't go crazy with the amount of stuff you're getting (only if someone is getting it in their luggage). You can claim it is for personal use, of course it is better to have the boxes unsealed.

Isn't customs usually charged on courier/deliveries? I was wondering if opening the seal/packaging of the components and packing them along with normal luggage would work. I've seen this recommended by a fair few people on the internet. All these parts are for personal use anyways so opening the seal doesn't change anything for me.

Yes this works most of the time. Unsealed package and in luggage with a known person.

Be wary of warranty issues and DOA items though.

I was to import processor, ssds and ram in Jan this year when my sis in law was returning from US. I even have a thread here for import duty related.
I digged in a lot on Indian customs official website and found we can import up to 80k electronic stuff without any duties albeit it shouldn't be sealed but open box. And always safe to carry the original invoices and when questioned just say it belongs to you and you bought it back and carried as well to the US.
But I got even best deals here locally so sis only got the rams as she already purchased on my behalf and diverted it to my cousin!

I had a friend bring me a laptop from the US. This was before they allowed you to bring in even personal laptops without charging duty. Course this only applies to Indian citizens and not foreigners.

They used to mark the bag with chalk so the customs would pick out the bag when you passed them later on.

All my friend did was grab the bag before the guy could put the chalk on it. I remember my friend saying he heard that guy say "where is that bag with the laptop" when my friend was already ten feet away :D

This was Bangalore. The Bombay customs are much sharper and is why he chose to come directly here via Lufthansa.

Looks like its 50k now. Is this for all items carried (personal phone, laptop etc) or only components and such?

Most brands I contacted aren't providing a global warrenty and hence I'm focusing on good name brands to avoid any possible issues. Same stands for DOAs, however they are a bit risky since I can only test the good after I get them here, and they'll have to be sent back for RMA/return when my relatives go back, further complicating stuff. But thats a risk I'm willing to take based on the price difference.

i did import three things , motherboard cpu and ram its very beneficial but do note our indias hardware and SKUs differ completely .You will get international warranty on amd Now how to bring it .its simple

Open the box flatten it and just keep processor in the processor tray or put it in some plastic box since it is amd it has pins .this is the only item that you will get value savings.

What about mobo ram and gpu. Indian distributors etc imports them rather than the OEM officially selling them in india so whenever oem sends a batch of hw it also updates those batch of serial numbers against all the india service center .So whenever you will go for RMA they will say is "Product" ka serial number database mai nahi dikh raha than you will have to say usa bla bla bla .he says we cannot do the RMA than he will give you the escalation mail than you write an email to person in taiwan with false praise for the company please consider it etc and than you may get your RMA approved not worth it.

Getting AMd processor is ok . Even intel doesn't support international RMA in india .

try to get something where rma warranty doesnt come into the picture . or you can take a hit . Good thermal pads ,thermal paste cheap air cooler ( need to consider weight aspect) .Some 90 degree cable adaptors connectors

I know AMD provides international warrenty, but I've already got a processor and won't be buying a new one. The main items I need are the mobo and GPU, both of which have issues with warrenty.
