What is the most cost-effective way of importing a USED product from the U.S.? Afaik customs are charged on the value of the item being shipped, so since its a used product can one receive an item literally for free (say declaring goods as gifts)? Excluding shipping charges of course. Just don't want to incur any unnecessary charge. How would third party shippers charge then?

As per rules one cannot import used stuff. Also u taking about free....u may be asked to pay the penalty for importing used product.

Used electronics can't be imported into India anymore. There was a ruling on this two years ago and customs is really strict on this. A friend of mine who had to get parts for his vintage turntable struggled and ran pillar to post to get the parts released and finally managed to do it after raising a huge fuss.

Ok what if someone in the U.S. ships a product, regardless of its condition, to me declaring it as a "gift/no commercial value"? I got an item that way once shipped by USPS. There was no custom charges imposed on it IIRC. Likewise I received a gift from Taiwan in the form of a "sample", however the value of the goods was declared at $25. I was wondering if the same could be applied here.
Is there any other way?

Anything below 2k can be imported thru USPS/Normal Post, But if the custom officer in charge thinks its more then 2k can detain the shipment and will ask for prof of value and from there they will charge u the import duty or if ur lucky can get it without duty also.

Most of the products that i had bought on Ali express had come duty free. This includes couple if cellphone display costing around 4k. So give it try.

Hmm...I thought that bypassing a "more than 2000rs"-worth value as a <2k could work but i see that the "proof" will be a problem. Will a declaration like those courier declarations form work?

Dont know about that....but it all depends on ur luck. As said had ordered stuff from Ali express like cell phone display and they were well ovre then 2k and were never detained.

That's because Mobile phone parts used to carry 0% duty. I don't know if they have increased duties for them or not.

FWIW apple has applied for a license to sell 2nd hand phones in India. Since they started their upgrade erey year plan they need a place to sell their 'used' phones.
