One India plan announced, Rupee One for telephone calls anywhere in India from March 1
The state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) today announced the much-awaited One-India plan, which promises uniform STD rates across the country, effective from March 1.
Under this plan subscribers would be able to call anywhere throughout the country with a maximum tariff of Re. 1 per minute. The STD charges will be slashed by up to 58 per cent. The rentals for fixed-line services will be hiked to Rs 299 a month and local call charges would cost Rs 1 for three minutes.
“All other calls made from landline phones anywhere in the country or on mobile phones would be charged at the rate of Re 1 a minute. For post-paid mobile services, there will be a rental of Rs 299 and the calls to other BSNL subscribers would be at the rate of 40 paise a minute. Calls to any other network across the country would attract a tariff of Re one a minute,†chairman and managing director, BSNL, A.K. Sinha said.
The pre-paid subscribers, on the other hand, are being offered a package of Rs 799, which would include a talk time of Rs 550 for a validity period of 30 days. Under the package, calls made to BSNL subscribers would be at the rate of 60 paise a minute while for other networks it would be at the rate of Rs one a minute.
However, due to this launch BSNL, may face a projected loss of Rs 3,000-5,000 crore. But Minister for Communications and IT, Dayanidhi Maran has initiated the move and was desperate to roll out the One India.
Initially the plan was to take off on January 1 and then on January 26. But it failed to take off as Maran differed with the BSNL board over tariffs.
