India’s telecom regulator, TRAI, has amended tariff rules to mandate mobile service providers to offer recharge plans exclusively for voice calls and SMS with no compulsion to buy Internet data. The new rule tweaks, announced on Monday, aims to provide tailored options for consumers who do not use mobile data. It also extends the validity of special recharge coupons from the current cap of 90 days to a maximum of 365 days.

Good for wifi and broadband only internet users. bad for companies. I wonder if they will increase price of data plans even more to make up for the loss?

I have to recharge 4 numbers, 299 for 28 days *4 = 1196, I get 1.5Gb daily on all numbers which are rarely used like once or twice a month.
I got a WIFI that gives 400Mbps unlimited data for 1170, And that's what everyone at my home uses.
It's absurd that from a household perspective we have to pay almost 1200 only to make a few calls.

I was choosing the value pack of jio for my mum's phone, it was 479rs for 84 days with 6gb data and unlimited calls. Maybe, after this move of TRAI, we'll get an even cheaper plan.

Oh no. This is sad news. I really liked paying 480 for less than 3 months recharge (160 avg p.m.) on my mum's number so that she can call me when I'm outside. Her total outgoing call on avg is like 2 to 3 hrs per month, that's hebby usage, and paying 160 for that was suppar low.

Bad move.

try BSNL, they have 6months, yearly recharges..
 
TRAI Rs 20 plan to keep sim active

I wonder when it will be available.
I have my Vodafone number inactive.
Want to activate it to just to recieve calls.
But I am also not understanding this plan.
Do I need to just out Rs 20 as talktime and it will activate my number for next 30 days.

Or is there need to have previous plan going on with remaining Rs 20 before expiry?.

Article says:
"a SIM card is deemed deactivated if it hasn’t been used for more than 90 days—roughly three months... if you have a prepaid plan and there is Rs 20 balance in your number then that amount will be deducted to extend the SIM’s activation for an additional 30 days. If the balance is insufficient, the SIM will be deactivated, making it impossible to make or receive calls or access the internet."

This is at least 10 year old "news". You can't do anything with those 20 rupees (no incoming outgoing call, SMS, data, nothing). The only thing is that they can't take away your number and give it to someone else as long as they can get their Rs. 20/month.

This is exactly what happened.

Now ₹1958 (365 day) recharge on Jio is no data recharge.

I also had a shit ton of vouchers but now they arent there anymore.
Even though I recharge every 3 months I am not getting any vouchers now.
Jios 1st 3month recharge was 400rs I think then it went to 666rs and now 890rs for 3months and that too without any vouchers. Since dont have any other choice other than BSNL which is still in 3G now upgrading to 4G not avialble for our circle so only choice for me is Jio.
But my parents, in laws, aunts, uncles & sisters all are on BSNL 3G maybe upgraded to 4G dont know. They still have other godly devotion on BSNL.
I am using BSNL FTTH since 4 years from Hyderabad to Here in TN, Still using the Rs.777 150MBPS plan and I pay Rs.943 total including GST. My parents pay Rs.706 for 60MBPS plan in our home town and my in laws and others pay Rs.1000 for 100MBPS Airtel plan in Hyderabad.
This TRAI is indeed helping private telecoms make more money for less services they provide.
