Hi friends,
I'm thinking of buying a cloth dryer. No body known to me here in Kolkata have used one. So I need some info from some actual user
i) How is the convenience - does clothes get wrinkled too much in the process of drying?
ii) How much time is required for drying to complete?
iii) What about electricity consumption?
iv) And lastly -which one to buy and how dent in the pocket is expected?

TIA

hey frind,

go for IFB CLOTH DRIER, as it does the job 100%, and the machine life is fantastic, absolutely no need for sun drying.

Well let me answer these questions. I've been using a Haier 5kg clothes dryer for the last year.

i) Hardly any wrinkling and it dries 100% if you give sufficient time

ii) 90-120min for fully drying a 5 kg load depending upon type of clothes. Jeans etc take the longest time to dry.

iii) Not too much. Didn't see a very significant increase in electricity bills. Maybe 50-100 bux a month

iv) I pair arnd 15 grand a year ago. Might be cheaper now.

I found two other options in the market. A siemens was 18.5k, IFB was 14k. I chose the Haier over the IFB as the former has a bigger compartment. The siemens didn't have a stainless steel drum.

DO post back about what you ended up buying and what options were available (incl. the prices)..thinking of getting one, I abolutely hate putting clothes out on a line for drying)

We were going to buy a dryer but we thought the running cost of these is too high so we gave up the idea.

I worked out costs taking into account an electricity consumption for a load of 2000 watts for the heating and spin motor. This worked out to around Rs 14.70 per hour at our current electricity rate of Rs 7.35 per unit, which totals Rs 882/- per month which is based on 30 cycles of 2 hours each. We felt that this amount was way too much to add to our already exorbitant electricity bills.

I am not very good at maths. please feel free to correct me if I have miscalculated.

Exactly my point... and as far as I have learned from MSEB, I am trying to avoid MSEB as much as possible... trying to be as much independent of electricity as possible. I am not sure but apart from Gujarat am pretty sure if any state has 100% power supply.

Yes I have also heard the same,:S

Just thought about this.

One thing to keep in mind is - does the heater in a dryer remain on for the full 2 hour cycle or does it keep cutting off, which would make for a much lower power bill.

An example - I have a Siemens washing machine and for this I have attached an AMP meter on its line, this shows a reading of 10 AMPS when the heating element of the washing machine is being used, the heating element is on only for a max of 10 minutes during one full wash cycle. The balance of the time the AMP meter registers less then 1 AMP, which is what its motor consumes. This means that one wash cycle with the washing machine will be using little power.

I think the heater will not be on for the whole drying cycle - there must some thermostatic control like those in Irons to maintain a constant temp.

Input from any user is required to confirm this.

@Chaos

Do you use the dryer everyday and for how much time? Can you please check again your electricity bills and confirm the actual increase in billed amount? If its actually a increase of 100 bucks then I'm going to buy one tomorrow.

I had used the dryer in US, Seattle to be precise, those were chilly december days and back then a dryer is a must in those days. It would take about 1/2 hour to dry the clothes up.

So as you mentioned yes there is a thermostat.

The manual states the motor is around 1kW and the heater is 500W. So its close to your number. However do you really need to run it 30 times a month? I typically dry clothes twice a week and Rs 7.35 per unit :O. I'm paying around 4-5 bucks here.

get prepared for high rates.. and loads of power cuts :P

Yeah man... I wont mind paying but the inconsistency scenario keeps bugging me.

I am seriously thinking of going to 32" from 40" LCD because it draws less power. Hence can run it off inverter.

Do these driers dry the clothes completely?? I mean COMPLETELY?

I think most washing machines do a good job of drying the clothes to 70%..

@Lt get a new inverter instead..you'll hate yourself for downgrading...:P

Yes they can dry 100% and you dont need your clothes to hang for drying.

I have a lot of space for hanging the clothes for drying but in Kolkata specially during monsoons heavy clothes do not get dried in one day which causes those typical musty odour - yuck. I put a lot of dettol in the final rinse cycle of my WM to avoid this.

So, I am thinking of a drier.

@Party monger: iirc he stays in pune, and i'll recommend a 3" chinese phone for puneits as it'll use least power, dude u aint seen nothing yet, how does 6hrs a day power cut sounds to you?

@Chaos: mumbai aint that badly hit with power cuts iirc, so you'll be safe i guess.

@eazy: omg thanks for opening the eyes, i was about to get a new washer and also a dryer, will settle for the IFB Senator 6kg only then. IFB says its 80% drying. No dearth of heat in pune anyways

Ohh yeah they do ... at least the one I used in seattle.

I don't know man, that will just solve the situation, there ain't any permanent solution, unless I decide to move to some other continent (ATM WAF < 0 ).

PM stays in Nagpur, hence is aware of the cuts. I appreciate Nagpur in many terms compared to Pune, for e.g. people will first do the fist work first and then talk if authorities don't do there work there. In Pune, people usually just talk.

In Mumbai you will need to run the clothes thru the dryer after every wash as the humidity here is very high, about 60 - 70% thru most of the year and 50% during Dec - Feb which is Mumbai's winter. Of course during the Monsoon it is around 80%. I have a Hygrometer next to my computer so I know this :)

YUP - Rs. 7.35 per unit in South Mumbai where we get power supplied by BEST, this part of Mumbai there is NO load shedding/power cuts, I think you mentioned that you are going to stay in the suburbs when you come to Mumbai - get ready for lots of power cuts :) .... AND... because we in South Mumbai have no power cuts these guys include a special surcharge in our bills called "Reliability Charges" !! :O This charge is for guaranteeing us no load shedding - this is about 20% of the bill amount !! I wonder if the ISP's will start to charge a Reliability Charge for guaranteeing full download speeds and no breaks in connections :ohyeah:
