Hi Everyone ,

I have ordered Lenovo G40-45 today and I intend to upgrade the HDD with a SSD.

I did some research and got confused of what to buy and what not to buy .

Can someone please explain what I need to see before buying a SSD for Laptop upgrade , what caddy size to buy ?
9mm/7mm/2.5mm ??
Is it better to install in HDD slot or optical bay ?

Please can someone enlighten .. thanks in advance .

The height of the HDD/SSD is 9mm/7.5mm - the smaller ones will fit in bigger ones, since the mounting holes are the same, but not the reverse. As for laptop HDD - its 2.5 inch HDD,while desktops are usually 3.5 inch ones.[DOUBLEPOST=1450093089][/DOUBLEPOST]As for installation - its best to replace the HDD with SSD. In some cases, replacing the ODD with a HDD caddy also works - but no surety of it. Does not work with my Sony VAIO.

The cheapest you can get with VFM (AFAIK) is Sandisk - this is with coupons and etc from sites such as paytm, etc. However, I would suggest going with Samsung SSDs - we are running a 480GB RAID10 (240GBx4) testing array with them. I too will be migrating to a SSD on my laptop.

I've been using a Transcend 128GB SSD on my Asus X550LD for a while now. Replaced the HDD with SSD and removed the ODD and successfully got the HDD fixed in.

Regarding the size of the caddy, you'll need to check the size of the ODD after removing it from the casing. Order a caddy of the same size. I'm using a 9.5mm Storite caddy.

Sorry for bumping this old thread but I have a related question..

vivek, I have a 8 years old sony viao laptop. I am thinking of replacing hdd with a new ssd and using a DVD drive caddy to use my current HDD in place of optical drive but after reading your comment that it didnt work for your viao I am not sure if I should go ahead with this upgrade.

With a 8 year old laptop, I am pretty sure it would come with a 320 or 500GB HDD. You can get a 500GB SSD (the cheaper ones) for less than 10K and maybe even lesser with the cashbacks running. Would suggest to do it.

In this case, I never bothered to follow up why the ODD swap did not work. I might, if I get the time since I have all the three VAIOs with me....[DOUBLEPOST=1539023364][/DOUBLEPOST]As @zibalingz posted in another thread - https://www.onlyssd.com/product/kingston-a400-2-5-480gb-sata-iii-tlc-ssd-sa400s37-480g/

^ Yes it came with a 320 GB drive but I upgraded it to 1TB couple years back. I dont think I can manage with just 500GB HDD/SSD alone, runs out of space even on 1TB drive. Also thinking of getting a new laptop next year so dont want to invest too much in this old laptop. Anyways I couldn't wait for your response and had already ordered a 120GB SSD (I just need it for OS and a few apps, nothing else) and a caddy. :)
Will update this thread if the SSD and the caddy combo works.
