Linux Installing Ubuntu on External Hard disk - will it erase already stored data?

Hi folks, i am all geared up to install Ubuntu on my external hard drive . This drive has around 12gb of free space, will installing Ubuntu here erase data already present ?

Nope. Just make sure that you partition it manually on that 12GB of free space.

No not at all....just like @kirshnandu said, carefully make ubuntu partitions in free space only.

I selected Partition Manually option. While partioning, i allocated 10gb as the root . (ext4 journalling system) , but it gives " The selected partition size is not sufficient"

best use wubi installer !

No!! Ubuntu installed with Wubi faces many problems later. Best is to install from CD/USB.

3 GB - for home..
8 GB - for /
