Hey all...

I was planning to install windows 7 on my dell 1420 since Vista Basic appears to be really slow on the system.

Kindly suggest whether i should go in for 32 bit or 64 bit.

[Personally I am leaning towards 32 bit since my laptop just has 2 gb ram and finding 64 bit drivers for this system would also be a pain. Moreover I'm not convinced of any particular gain I would experience by a 64 bit install.]

Before proceeding for the install I wanted to inquire about any issues that I should keep in mind before the installation. If there are any please do quote them.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Regards

Installing 64-bit OS on 2GB makes no point actually. I suggest to go ahead with 32-bit only.

Regarding tips, well Windows 7 installation is just great and takes care of everything by itself. My Studio 15 installs it in flat 18 min and I don't even need to install any drivers later on. So start the installation, sit back and relax ;)

Warning: You might experience some serious increase in speed after installing Windows 7! :D

Thanx a lot.

Are you sure that there wouldn't be any driver related issues...? And I am really happy to hear the increase in the speed of the system.

Well I am not sure whether Windows 7 has drivers for your lappy as well but yes definately sure that all of your vista drivers will work just fine on Windows 7. So you don't need to worry about that.

However after installing it, check on the Dell's site if there are any latest updates available. They did release some drivers just for Windows 7 (but vista's also work) :)

18mins is slow, mine was 13min flat :P on hp laptop.

Windows 7 will d/l & install all drivers automatically, so dont worry about it.

Ah come on you are just saying that! It can't be that fast as well :bleh:. I counted mine with stopwatch TBH it's 18 min and 36 sec from clicking the install button to the login screen! :hap2:

Yep it worked fine in mine with Windows 7 drivers :)

Lucky you, i had to run the bluetooth patch everytime i restarted my system. Maybe because i have Inspiron 1525?

Install the latest 7604/7600 build. Most of the things would work natively or you'd only have to update your windows using Windows Update.

Update your drivers from there, under Optional updates.

Cheers.

Win 7 32-Bit working flawlessly and the speed has actually increased a lot. Vista was actually a resource hog.

Just had to install the audio drivers to get the laptop speakers working.

Thanx all for the suggestions
