i hope you know how 301 redirects work. It is used for permanent redirection of domain.Google is smart enough to catch 301 strategies, but what about others? Backlinks will be dead unless you have set permanent 301 redirection to new domain. Now the question, for how long are you going to keep this top domain level redirection? forever? If yes, then what's the point of changing the name?
