These cards are standalone Wi-Fi+BT M.2 A+E-keyed modules, not CRFs, which means they have no dependency on the host processor. As long as the motherboard (be it a desktop or laptop) has a free A+E key M.2 slot without any whitelist in the firmware, you should be able to use them.

Keep in mind that the Intel 3168 series is quite old and should be considered as an entry-level card due to 1x1 TX/RX support and the lack of MU-MIMO.

It may be an entry level but it works very well for both wifi and Bluetooth, it wouldn't be used for an enterprise level machines if it didn't.

Indeed, Intel's hardware and software are far superior than typical Realtek and MediaTek cards in the same category.

Nonetheless, the lack of MU-MIMO could be a deal breaker for some, hence it's better to mention it, IMHO.

Have an old Intel 3160 Wifi AC + BT chipset. Such bad drivers the download speed barely goes over 5Mbps (yes, Megabits not Megabytes) while upload gives full bandwidth. I've done literally everything possible to troubleshoot including clean windows installs, latest and older drivers even swapped laptops/hardware around. All machines, same behavior.

Funny thing, card works absolutely fine on linux on any hardware. So I blame shitty intel PROSet wireless drivers.

3160 is a chipset from 2013, hence you had to stick with the legacy (read "buggy") PROSet framework under Windows.

Intel has switched to the unified wireless driver framework since then.

Still, the drivers are bad since 2014 for win8.1 till last version released for win10 in mid 2019. Didn't expect intel to not fix this shit in 6 years. I tried most major driver released with their latest minor versions on win8.1 to win10. All had same issue. Not sure how consumers coped with this shitty QoS from intel.

I know it's going a little OT but hey... free bumps :p

EDIT: 3168 doesn't use PROSet drivers and should be unaffected.

Off topic, is there a 3rd kind of slot for these wifi/bt cards?

Regarding the M.2 form factor, you can't find any other kind of consumer focused Wi-Fi+BT cards. Other than the M.2 A/E key, the M.2 B key can also accommodate both PCIe and USB connection streams, but the latter is mostly used for WWAN cards.

You can utilize an appropriate adapter and antenna converters to install a M.2 A/E card to a legacy half-mini PCIe slot as well, but that's entirely a different domain.
