Hi.. friend is planning to get an new i7 setup.. just confused abt which proccy to go for.. some say that Xeon are really good. as they o.c really well at low vcore ..while I7 new batch code are.. okay.. nuthing g8.. about it.. so what ya guys recommend.. which one to go for.. if upgrading to new cpu .. 920 D0 or W3520.. kindly advice..

As per our conversation on the phone, check out the reviews on i7 930. They may be good overclockers + the stock speed starts from 2.8ghz and will be priced on par with the i7 920, and eventually replace the latter.

However, as per my experience, Xeons can be overclocked far better and with minimal effort compared to i7 920, but its a carbon copy when it comes to stock performance.

true but again dont u think it will be too exp !!! 25 - 30kk..

make that close to 50k initially.

on to the topic. i am using some d0's & some xeons. both are the same if you find good stepping.

anyways there isnt much difference in the two. just 700rs. so i guess you can go for xeon.

im also planning a upgrade soon and i wanted to know if the xenon processor is compatible with any x58 board or does it work on some and not on others? Im planning to get a MSI X58 Pro-E board, will the xenon work on that or is it "hope for the best" ??

the xeon w3520 & similar 1's will work on any x58 platform.

where can one purchase the Xeon? Is it readily available?

it was available locally here in mumbai last week. the xeon w3520 cost 700rs more than i7 920. should be there in blore also.

I was wondering how good 32nm Xeons will be for desktop guys (at least for those who have heard about xeons)

Intel's doesn't plan a gulftown quadcore in desktop space for at least for another 5-6 months but will release Quadcore Xeons based on 32nm (5XXX series) in March. If these chips work in desktop X58 motherboards, they will be golden

Are u sure? Cuz INTEL doesn't plan to release ANY 32nm QUAD CORE till 2011 with Sandy Bridge, AFAIK

I heard something will come around sept, oct... and even though there are no plans right now, may be Intel will release something if Thuban becomes competitive
