There you go.

Intel Core versus AMD's K8 architecture, Anandtech

Wide Dynamic Execution, Advanced Digital Media Boost, Smart Memory Access and Advanced Smart Cache; those are the technologies that according to the marketing people at Intel enable Intel to build the high performance, low energy CPUs using the new Core architecture.

Of course, as an AnandTech Reader, you couldn't care less about which Hyper Super Advanced Label the marketing folks glue on their CPUs. "Extend the digital lifestyle by combining robust performance with low power consumption" could have been another marketing claim for the new Core architecture, but VIA already cornered that sentence for its C7 CPUs. The marketing slogans for Intel's Core and VIA's C7 are almost the same; the architectures are however vastly different.

EDIT: Ooops! Missed post by Rahul in AM2 thread!!

Over at HKEPC, they tested the next generation Conroe - Intel Core E6700 - is tested on an Asrock 77i65G motherboard. This is a i865G motherboard with ICH5, which means that it was meant for last generation's Pentium but is still compatible with the fastest CPU Intel has. The rev 2.0 version comes with an AGP 8X slot - I am not kidding - a mATX format, three PCI slots, RoHS compliance, SATA/PATA ports and DDR400 compatibility. HKEPC did not overclock the Conroe which runs at 2.66GHz. There are a couple of 3DMark 05 benchmarks as well.

Intel will call its new processor line for desktop and laptop computers the Core 2 Duo, while AMD talks about more than $1 billion wasted in energy costs by businesses using Intel-based servers.

Intel on Monday will continue its "branding" push, unveiling a new name for its upcoming and more energy-efficient processors for desktop and laptop PCs. At the same time, rival Advanced Micro Devices has launched a campaign to highlight what it calls more than $1 billion wasted in energy costs by businesses using Intel-based servers.

Intel will call its new processor line for desktop and laptop computers the Core 2 Duo. Formerly code named Conroe for the desktop and Merom for the laptop, the new brand name includes a 2 to indicate its the second generation of dual-core technology and Duo to signify the number of number of processing cores in the device.

@Hunt3r,
As of Monday, Intel will announce that Merom/Conroe will be called "Core 2 Duo/Solo," and not simply "Core Duo/Solo" as most of us originally thought. Intel will allegedly be putting out a "Core 2 Duo Extreme" for gamers at some point.

This branding change makes plenty of sense, given the fact that Core 2 (aka Merom/Conroe) represents a significant advance over Core (aka Yonah). It also makes sense in light of the recent news that Intel will be introducing a new microarchitecture every two years.

CNET's coverage also contains some additional details on the new model number scheme for Core 2. Specifically, we now know that numbers in the 4000 and 6000 ranges will denote Conroe processors, while numbers in the 5000 and 7000 ranges will signify Merom parts. Intel has also added a new letter prefix designating power consumption to its core lineup, the "E" prefix for processors that consume between 55 and 75 watts.

Contrary to the CNET report, this is not the first time Intel has incorporated power consumption data into its processor model numbers. Current Core processor numbers use the T prefix for 25-49W range, the L prefix for the 15-24W range, and the U prefix for 14W and below. So the new E prefix will be positioned above the T prefix to denote the highest power consumption levels.

^^Thanks dip, but i already knew that :p Its still not the same like today where we have pentium 4 5xx/6xx etc and pentium M 7xx. Try explaining to a layman whos going for a desktop pc to go for a Core 2 Duo 6000 series when he knows that 7000 is also available. Anyways even today most people still think centrino is a processor so i wouldnt be surprised that they start calling it centrino 2 duo or shthin.

Dell Inc.’s new generation gaming system, which the company unveiled early on Thursday, will sport four GeForce 7900 graphics processors along with dual-core Intel Core 2 Duo-series chip, it was revealed during the E3 exhibition.

Intel Corp., the world’s largest maker of x86 microprocessors and the exclusive supplier of central processing units (CPUs) to Dell, has demonstrated Dell’s new XPS-series system at the E3 exhibition in Los Angeles, California. The new Dell XPS Renegade 700 will feature Intel’s Core 2-series processor along with four GeForce 7900 graphics cards in quad SLI configuration.

DailyTech - Announcing Intel Core 2 Duo

The highest end desktop processors, previously named Extreme Edition, will be labeled as Core 2 Extreme opposed to the mainstream Core 2 Duo.

This might mean that the Extreme Edition will not be called the Core 2 Duo at all, but as just Core 2 Extreme.

And, reports indicate that the XPS Renegade 700 will have a "Core 2 Duo-series" chip.

This could in turn mean that the Renegade 700 will not have an Extreme chip.

And, this could mean that the Extreme chips may not be among the first Conroes to come out, contrary to reports from sites like Anandtech. Maybe only is Q4, or even Q1'07.

Being nitpicky, but just a thought. :)

^^Man it sure isnt a decent picture for AMD as of now.... every one wants atleast Blue one :) But I hope that they keep the fight on, for us :D

^^ LOL it will be better for us, as AMD sure had plugged the performance as well as performance per watt in the near past. Which gave them a leverage to price their CPU's on par or above Intel. ow with Intel getting the performance tag back mostly. You will see a big drop in prices for AMD, consider the prices of its X2 range falling belo 10k RS after Conroe debuts.

Intel as a rule hardly revises its prices, and now with the performance crown back, it will leverage the position to sell at a higher price.

In the end we win.

Although even I would very much like that; I would not expect earth-shattering price-cuts from AMD.

They can't afford huge price-cuts, especially of dual core CPUs. Maybe with more Fabs, things will change...
