Intel is currently enjoying great success in the marketplace with its line of Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad and Celeron processors. AMD at the same time is seeing huge drops in its profitability and is making workforce cuts to help profits.

Just last week AMD posted a Q1 2008 loss of $385 million and announced plans to restructure its business. Yesterday, Intel announced price cuts on some of its quad-core processors of up to 50%. The new pricing by Intel will not help AMD in the marketplace with price becoming less of a factor.

News.com reports that Intel slashed the price of its Core 2 Quad Q6700 2.66GHz processor from $530 to $266 and the similar quad-core Xeon received the same exact price cut. Intel also cut prices of some of its older technology processors as well. The Celeron 430 dropped from $44 to $34 while the dual-core Celeron E1200 dropped from $53 to $43.

Pentium Dual Core processors also saw prices cut with the E2200 going for $74 after cuts and the E2180 going for $64. Along with the price cuts Intel also introduced a pair of new Celeron processors. The dual-core Celeron E1400 runs at 2GHz and will retail for $53 and a Celeron 570 running at 2.66GHz will sell for $134.

A pair of new Core 2 Duo processors was also introduced with the 2.83 GHz E8300 retailing for $163 and the E7200 running at 2.53GHz costing $133.

Athlon X2 was intended to compete with Pentium D's and it did that job beautifully. What AMD expects ?? A 2 generation old processor to compete with current one from the competitor ?????????? is that at all possible ?????

The biggest mistake thay made was to delay the Phenom lineup....still now they dont have any dual core phenom offering....They should fire their business executives...sticking to X2s for mainstream market..they are doing more harm to their reputation than good

Intel slashes its prices

12% - 50% as planned
As we initially reported here Intel has decided to cut its prices. This time around, their price cuts range from 10% to as much as 50%. Apparently, Intel is planning on getting rid of 65nm generation chips, and it's just a matter of time before they start giving away some kitchen appliances with their chips (just kidding).

Core 2 Duo E6850 (3.0 GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 4M of cache) dropped from $266 to $183, which is a 31% price drop.

Core 2 Quad Q6700 (2.66 GHz, 1066MHz FSB and 8M of cache) dropped by no less than 50%, and you can buy it for $266, compared to previous pricing of $530. Core 2 Quad Q6600, running at 2.40GHz got a 16% cut, and now costs $224, compared to its previous $266.

Quad-Core Xeons also got some hefty cuts, so now you can buy a Quad-Core Xeon X3230 (8M cache, 2.66GHz, 1066MHz FSB) for $266. Compared to its previous $530, it's a great deal and a 50% price cut. Its little brother, Xeon 3220 (running at 2.40) is now 16% cheaper and costs $224 (previously $266).

Dual-Core Xeon 3085 (4M cache, 3.0 GHz, 1333MHz FSB) is slashed by 29%, and now costs $188 (previously $266).

Of course, what kind of price cuts would they be if Celeron price-tags didn't follow? So, now Celeron DualCore E1200 (512K cache, 1.60 GHz, 800MHz FSB) costs a measly $43 (previously $53). Celeron 440 and 430 now cost $44 and $34 respectively, which is a 17% and 23% drop. Celeron 560 and 550 are now 20% cheaper and sold at $107 and $86, respectively.
