i am actually dumbfounded hearing this news

We knew Intel was in a hurry to ensure its Medfield processors hit smartphones but we never knew the level of urgency. Intel is currently looking at India and China to introduce its Medfield processor running Android smartphones, which could be launched as soon as April. In India, Lava is tipped to be Intel’s first partner, which is most likely to be made public at MWC. Lava will launch a new smartphone oriented brand that will be run separately from its mobile phone brand and will operate under its own brand name. It will have its own sales and distribution teams in place. At the moment we are not sure whether it would carry only Intel’s hardware or will also sell smartphones based on Qualcomm, TI and NVIDIA’s gear too. Read on for details of India’s first Intel Medfield running Android smartphone.

The device is likely to feature a 1.6GHz dual-core processor, a 8.0 MP camera and a 3.5 or 3.7-inch display. We are not quite sure why Intel would go with Lava and not a more prominent brand. It could be a case of global OEMs not being able to ship commercial products as early as Intel would prefer. It also would not want to miss the India/China opportunity, while major OEMs would look at introducing such a product globally.

But even if the device’s performance is top-notch, will consumers be willing to spend upwards of Rs 20,000 on a smartphone from a relatively new, local brand? It looks like both us and Intel will find out at the same time.

WTF! 20000 for LAVA
<

This phone could be tempting once the price goes below 20K(intel products always go on a sale). Since its based on reference design, entire design is done by intel, only lava branding is used. if Intel can provide proper support(I am hoping > 1 year warranty) then it could be a good buy at < 20K.

But why Lava of all the brands? Intel could've chosen Philips, Olive, Huawei, ZTE, Micromax or Spice instead.

I wouldn't care if it is Lava or any other brand for that matter. Though hoping they put Intel Inside on the back.

Full blown review out. Pretty impressive phone for 22k

Stands up against the dual Core Cortex A9's. Hope the price dips quickly.

The camera and screen too seems to be very good.

The Atom Z2460 in the X900 is a competent dual-core Cortex A9 competitor with competitive battery life and power draw, and no doubt Z2580 (its dual core, SGX544MP2 high end counterpart clearly targeted at Windows 8 platforms) will be equally as competitive against quad core A9s. If Intel's goal with both Medfield and the X900 was to establish a foothold in the smartphone SoC space and demonstrate that it can indeed deliver x86 in a smaller form factor and lower power profile than ever before then it truly is mission accomplished.

The x86 power myth is finally busted. While the X900 doesn't lead in battery life, it's competitive with the Galaxy S 2 and Galaxy Nexus. In terms of power efficiency, the phone is distinctly middle of the road - competitive with many of the OMAP 4 based devices on the market today. If you've been expecting the first x86 smartphone to end up at the bottom of every battery life chart, you'll be sorely disappointed.

finally an amazing review out... that too indepth detailed... 22k is not bad. Lava is just the manufacturer... Anyone in TE bought this phone?

22k, the GPU is ancient power VR SGX540

Am thinking of buying the Galaxy Nexus after the price drop, but to my dismay even galaxy Nexus has the same GPU. Wonder if it will be able to run games coming out next year etc..

On other notes, a brilliant review at Anandtech, after being a tech enthusiast for so long, it is disappointing going through the various mobile reviews elsewhere. I love the way sites like Anadtech, Techreport etc report on the technology aspect. It's always nice to know the results in the graphs, but even better to the reason why the results are so.

The phone actually is pretty nifty, and is able to surpass Galaxy Nexus in almost every department. However I doubt Lava is going to have a good dev base, but this is certainly one up for Intel. 22nm process node is successful with Ivy Bridge, and am sure Medfield refresh with a better GPU is gonna give ARM a serious run for money. Not to forget Intel has billions of dollars in R&D, which are now targeting for power efficiency rather then speed as AMD has more or less given up the game in X86.
