The success of the Sandy Bridge architecture has caught up with some of Intel's fastest chips, over the course of the weekend the Santa Clara-based company cutting the prices for two of their fastest processors on the market, the Core i7 960 and the hexa-core Core i7 970.

Although the price cut has not been made official by Intel, the KitGuru website found that, in the UK, the two processors are listed way below their previous recommended prices.

As the same website reports, the Core i7 960, which was previously available for £460, has had its price reduced to £240, a whopping 48 percent lower than before.

Similarly, Intel has dropped the price of the Core i7 970 processor from £700 to £450, which translates into a 64% price reduction.

Furthermore, this trend seems to have made its way into the US too, as a quick price search has revealed the Core i7 970 listed for as low as $605.99, while the Core i7 960 can now be purchased for $315.99. Both are in stock and are available for shipping.

The Core i7 960 was launched in the forth quarter of 2009, is clocked at 3.2GHz and features four physical cores as well as support for Intel's Hyper-Threading technology.

Its TDP is rated at 130W and packs Turbo Core support as well as a tri-channel memory controller.

The same 3.2GHz clock speed is also used by the Core i7 970, but this chip features a six-core design and 12MB of L3 cache, instead of the 8MB found in the Core i7 960.

If you decide to buy one of the two CPUs please bear in mind that not all retailers have yet updated their prices, so you may need to do a bit of digging around before committing to buy.

makes me feel INtel is trying to clear the leftover stock

1366 is a dead socket man

i still remember when friend bought a core i7 950 for 27k lol

investing in the sandy bridge is anyday much better option

cheap and far more value for money also future proof

They also launched the 990X ... WOOOTT !!!
i think they just breathed some new life into this socket with SB closing in on its performance crown and all.
600 $ for a Intel 32 nm hexa aint bad at all. i mean i have used this socket for close to 3 years now and all i gotta do is put a 600 $ chip in here and its good for another year for sure till socket 2011 and then some too :)
These guys at 4.2 and above still hold the performance crown , not to mention the pci-e bandwidth:)
im happy today... can upgrade all my quads now !!
cheers and kind regards guys :)

@tool

so when u getting ur hands on the 990's :)

ps where the hell have u been bro

im all tied down with my exams

infact leaving for one now :(

IMO 970 400$ Price tag wud have created more preasure on AMD... But 600$ price tag wont do much harm on AMD Hexa Core CPUs... :)

just recommending a configuration for my friend who possibly might not want to wait for SB , i am guessing any processor would find it hard to beat an i7 960 right now in that budget

The price of 960 has already come down in indian markets... Check smc site... Smc is selling it for 14.5k
