Hey guys,
I wanted to buy an external hard disk and later it struck my mind that i had an old ide 40gb lying useless...

i gave it tomy friend to clean up wats left in the hdd and buy an external casing for it...

now i have a few queries regarding this...

1.when my frnd put the hdd in his sytem ,he deleted the drives and when he put it again, the hdd was'nt recognised

so now ,my doubt is do i need to install xp on the 40 gb drive or can i use it like any other external hdd..if so how? ( i know the file format should be either ntfs or fat32 before i transfer it into the hdd) but i want to know how i can transfer data into the 40gb hddi after i put it in the external casing ..
if u r confused after reading the above query ..so am i ..
ok to put it in the simplest of words.. the hdd has no drives ..evrything is deleted.. now before i put my hdd in an external casing and i connect it to the usb ,does it require an os in it? ..
2.. i was planning to buy zippy or gemini 3.5 inch IDE casing for my hdd so that i can use it as an external...but are the above ones compatible with SATA also?

are their any casings which support both IDE and SATA? if so, tell me the brands name and their price....

srry for the trouble..

looking forward for ur replies..( the true noob):ashamed:

You need to make partitions...no need to install an OS

I would suggest you to buy coolermaster Xcraft 350,ofcourse if you have the budget. It costs around 1600+tax

I think you may have not done this before so I'll explain with some detail. When you encase the HDD and connect the case to the USB port of your PC, you will have to use XP Disk Mgmt to create partitions(if they don't exist).

After connecting, right click on My Computer, select manage. Select Storage, then select disk mgmt. Find the disk(your disk should be visible here or else there's a problem) and create partitions. I think you then have to assign a drive letter after which you can format the partitions with a filesystem(FAT32 or NTFS) that you want.
