I'm planning to purchase iPad 4 Retina/iPad Mini I'm really not sure help me decide on this

1. I already have Blackberry Playbook 16GB want to move on since the updates have gone to stale state there.
2. I don't want Android tablets.
3. The primary purpose is watching movies/TV series/surfing with little gaming.
4. I don't want huge disk space since i plan to stream the movies from SMB/DLNA.
5. Want to make sure iPad support AC3/DTS(I can live without DTS support) along with every other video codec and it should play from Samba/NAS itself as i dont plan to keep movies on tablet.
6. The disk space with 16Gb is 13.3Gb which i guess would be sufficent enough even with some of games installed ?? I don't really want to pay for premimum disk space.
7. Display - Retina really matters ? I have not seen iPad4 yet so want to make sure how much of upp is it and worth it.

Dont buy any of these.. wait for ipad5 or mini2 :) I wanted to answer only one question...

YES...RETINA does make sense. You know what, i usually dont read books(after my college days, yes its true)... but now started to read books/pdfs because of retina screen :) BTW i've ipad3.

For other queries , more concerned about its media playing capabilities

If watching movies is your main concern then look for a tablet with expansion slot rather then iPad. Also if this is your first tablet then definitely go for 10" tablet as 7" just not good enough :P. If good gaming experience is a requirement then iPad 4 without any shadow of doubt. You will get everything with iPad 4 which a perfect tablet should offer except for versatility in media playing capabilities.

Requirement 1 -
If you want to play movies via nas, you would require to install the app named buzz. It should play all the movies you have via nas.

Requirement 2 -
It should play all the codecs but do check a bit of info on the app.

Requirement 3 -
Even after installing many games and apps i do have around 8 to 9 gb free.

Requirement 4 -
Retina makes an incredible difference. I own a ipad 2 myself and when i see my brother's ipad 4 i see a vast difference in picture quality.

All in all i would recommend you to get the 4 instead of the mini as it suits your requirement the best.

Magazines and Comics look absolutely stunning on the iPad mini. For the price they should have had retina on it but its not bad. Pictures that are not taken properly look horrendous. Zoomed out shots look a bit skewed. So there!

If the mini 2 comes out soon or the difference between the 2 gens is too much then will happily offload the mini.

I do not own iPad mini but have iPad 2. My untrained eyes cannot differentiate between retina and non retina on iPad 3 and iPad 2. At least that's what i felt so i went with iPad 2 for my purchase. Compared to mini, normal iPad is heavy.I had tried iPad mini in store and i found it to be of perfect size and pleasant to hold and far more mobile than normal iPad. It is super light and just feels great.
I use my iPad 2 for Video consumption only twice in a month when i am traveling Pune-Mumbai. Battery life with video is awesome. Can easily complete 3-4 episodes of a TV series and have more than 50% of battery remaining.
I would suggest you to go to a store having both these models (iPad 4 and mini) and play around for some time and buy what suits you.
You are the best judge of what you need. And believe me the experience on iPad / iPad Mini should be far more superior.

I'm not buying anything before ipad5 comes so that i can see the price drops

I have an iPad 2 gathering dust in my table drawer for the last 5 months. The reasons being:

1.Lumia 920

2.No 3G which renders it rather useless in most cases when there isn’t a hotspot around.

The iPad 2 can also be tethered with the 920 but I don’t do that. The tablet is also limited by its media playing capabilities as well. Besides, being back to the drag-n-drop scene (on the 920), I can’t even think of iTunes now although it is one of the best apps. to sync the content to the device. And yes, my eyes can comfortably differentiate the iPad 2 from the retina display models (3 and 4) quite comfortably. Honestly speaking, the iPad 2 display looks a lot worse now (looks a bit pixelated - I am not kidding!) after being spoilt by the 920’s display. Whenever I power on the tablet from standby, I see myself wiping its display with a microfiber cloth to see if the dust was causing it but no, the display has become like one of those Micromax phone displays. In fact, the iPad Mini has one of the best aspect ratios for a tablet like the Nexus 7. It can be comfortably held in one hand although typing and other operations require both the hands. It also sports the same resolution of the iPad 2 (1024 x 768 on a smaller screen thus higher pixel density) and looks a lot better than the iPad 2. The iPad Mini 2 will have a Retina Display when launched.

You have been using the 520 for some time now. Have you thought about the Surface tablet? Right now, the Surface isn’t as mature as the other devices around and haven’t been received well due to some pitfalls but it sure has raised a lot of eyebrows. The hardware has been extremely well received. Pricing has been a major deterrent since no one is willing to shell out a huge price for an unfinished device. It is speculated that MS might announce Surface 2/Surface Mini (with a lower price tag) during this year’s BDC which happens during the month of June. It might be a good idea to hold on until then.

One last thing - the iPads have a tremendous standby time! The last time I charged my iPad 2 was during January when I went home and when I powered it on last weekend, there was some 5-7% charge remaining!

@Gannu

Media playing capabilities ? I use AVPlayer on my 4S and AVPlayer HD on my iPad 2 and they play almost all media formats. No jailbreak needed and files can be copied to the device without using iTunes also (use iFunbox instead, sort of drag and drop only).

There are other media players too like Buzz Player, Good Player etc which do the same.

Media playing capabilities ?

It doesn't play 720p videos without stutter. I have VLC.

Not drag-n-drop in the true sense. The 920 doesn't require any application at all. It shows up as a mobile phone under portable devices. And the folder structure like this.

Now we always knew that about iOS devices right ? So this iFunbox is the next best solution available and yes it requires accessing unix like file structure then.
