Hey any one here has any idea when iPhone 3gs will launch in India.
I was planning to buy one from India as Vodafone or Airtel give factory unlocked one and with warranty.:hap2:
Instead of buying from ebay where any new update you can't put because of chances of the phone going brick.:P
Anyways spending 36k it is better I get an Indian warranty than none at all.
So guys any idea when it will launch.
It is been around 5months and still the phone has not launched in India,I hope they launch the phone soon.:ohyeah:

What makes you say that the official iPhones in India available through Vodafone or Airtel will be factory unlocked?

The past experience of iPhone 3g which was released as factory unlocked by both Airtel and Vodafone.:ohyeah:
Even if not factory unlocked but still I am on vodafone I will get the phone from them with one year warranty and I will get the phone for around 36k and not for 45k.:hap2:
I could get a iPhone 3gs from my friend in UK but the constant headache of unlocking and the fear of the phone going brick due to some update is not worth the money spent on it.:P

^ you are wrong ... last time the 3G was launched by Vodafone and Airtel, they were locked to the carrier.

You could get one from HongKong or a few other countries which sell factory unlocked version of the iPhone :)

BTW Apple have worldwide warranty iirc, so you shouldn't worry about buying locally.

ok, heard that it aint gonna launch in india, its gonna be 4G directly

lotsa issues between apple & vodafone / airtel over 3G which still unresolved

I have this much news from a confirmed source.

Vodafone HAS started stocking iPhone 3G's.

The matte back black 3Gs that got leaked was a prototype given for network testing, which Vodafone has got.

The iPhone is not expected to launch before 2010.

@XFactor: iPhone warranties are country specific, even if you have AppleCare for the iPhone. It is specific to the country you bought it from. Apple doesn't even have an iPhone service center here. You have to go through Vodafone/Airtel.

iphones sold in india, ie, by vodafone and airtel are not factory or officially unlocked. they are locked to carriers. and besides paying 36k for the phone it is compulsory for the customer to take a iphone plan which cost 800-1000 per month extra.

and so that there no further confusions please look here

Is there any difference between carrier support for the 3G and 3GS?

I was planning to buy a factory unlocked 3GS from abroad (given the continuing frustration of being unable to buy one here) and then to use it on Airtel - using their iPhone plan - even before the 3GS is released here - will that work? The phone just needs mobile and data services - no difference between 3G and 3GS for that - or am I missing something?

^^ Not sure if they will sell the iphone plan (whatever that means) to someone who has an iphone procured from a source different from them.

@OP

Vodafone and Airtel never gave unlocked iphones. But yes there was a news floating that airtel has authority to unlock the iphones sold by them.

Btw you can get the Iphone 3GS factory unlocked from Hong Kong.

yes, the apple website showed that airtel had the authority to unlock phones. that however is no longer the case.

the concept of locking phones is alright when we buy phones on contract at a subsidized rate. in india, operators are selling phones at full price and still locking them.

I have unconfirmed news from a senior source in telecom industry based in Europe that it will launch on 4th December in India, that too unlocked. Can't reveal the source though.

Note however that there are too many rumors floating around about the launch, so I won't be convinced about this one till it actually launches.

Thanks for the news.I was nearly on the verge of buying the phone from UK.
Hopefully I will buy this phone from India very soon.:hap2:
I think spending 30k above without getting any warranty is very risky.:hap5:
I have know quite a lot of my friends whose iPhone have gone brick due to the updating their phone OS.:@
So hopefully Vodafone and Airtel will launch the phone soon.:hap2:

And I heard a rumor that airtel and vodafone are still stuck with lots of stock of the 3G, which apple will not take back. Hence they are not too keen on launching 3GS. :P

With the kind of new phones that are expected to be launched worldwide (N900, HTC HD2, GSM Palm Pre, GSM Motorola Droid) in the next few months, the 3GS has lost quite a bit of its lustre. These beat the iphone on many parameters. The only thing that apple has going for it is the app store, which you can get on a ipod touch spending just 11K.

I dont see it is coming to India that soon . Foxconn has increased the production of iphones by 20% as the demand in US is more . Holiday season is around the corner so they would try to meet up the demand first in US till Xmas and then think about India . Airtel and Vodafone know better that 3G was not a big success in India .

Personally i think it might not be here before Q1 2010 .

What to say the competition is too intense after a long time.
Palm Pre,Pixi,iPhone 3GS,Android anyone phone and Blackberry Curve.
I want to buy them all.:hap2:
Give each one to my family member and take from them when I need to go out.
But that is just a dream.
The rest of the mobiles are not that great.
N900 is ok but not that great, the OS is ok but the hardware sucks resistive screen WTF do we still need the stylus.:bleh:
And less said about the Symbain the better and Windows Sucks big time.:ohyeah:

i very much doubt that the iphone is gonna be launched this year. and also the fact that its gonna be unlocked. this is cuz when iphones are carrier locked, apple earns a lot more money from that rather than selling them unlocked.

so ya if you want an an officially unlocked iphone buy it from australia/new zealand/hong kong/singapore/malaysia/italy/belgium/turkey

and if you buy it from india through the carriers you have to get an iphone plan. its a compulsion.

if you buy a jailbreaked one, then it doesnt matter where you buy from. as long as you are ready to wait for the cracks to be available for the new firmware...

Any update when will iPhone 3GS launch in India.:ohyeah:

It has been more than 6 months but still iPhone 3gs has not launched in India.

Wtf is happening here.

India is the 3rd largest mobile subscriber market in the world we deserve better than this.:@
