Bad news guys today my cousin landed from US carring 2 iphones + 1 his own. 2 laptops of which one was personal. All items where in his backpack. Got stuck in customs. Badluck!

They are asking 5k each for 2 used iphone 4s and 10k for the laptop.

Any ideas?, solution? or advice?

As far as i know, wasnt it the case that person coming from US can declare one laptop to be his/her own and the other as a gift?

That way they dont hold the laptop for duty charges.. if that is still the case i.e.

That's right.. So in toto he should be paying only for the extra iphone..

Sorry to hijack this thread. Can a person actually get two laptops from USA, one as personal and another as gift?

I always thought that a person can bring only one laptop?

AFAIK a person can get one laptop as personal and one as given by company. Not sure about the gift part tho.

Lots of employees from the company carry the laptop invoice, to prove it belongs to the company to get another laptop along with them while returning from the US.

Good if that is the case since i had plans to get a laptop with me when i return. As of now i have my company provided laptop (which i will carry) and another personal laptop (which my wife will carry), so i guess an additional new laptop (as personal) i can carry right ?

Also say if we have devices like iPhone / iPod Touch/ big screen android phones, then is it wise to carry them all in trouser / shirt pockets so as not to be scanned by customs. Asking this because at least in Mumbai, those custom folks make each and every bag pass through the scanner (even hand bags) when checking out of the airport. So the best way for putting high-end but smaller devices (like iPhone etc) inside the pocket. Will that work ?

One of my friends had an issue where he was carrying an office laptop and another laptop for a colleague. The custom people argued that he should have taken a note from customs while going to US that one of the laptops is a company provided one. My friend was forced to pay customs on the other new laptop. This makes me skeptical of carrying two laptops (one official and one personal).

Keeping aside the laptop scenario,is it wise to keep a bill of each and every electronic stuff that we are carrying just to show them that everything collectively under 25K (i think this is the limit as per Indian Customs)

5k for iPhone is tooo much.. For any mobile, the custom duty is 2.3% of value price.. Shouldn't exceed more than 1k for any mobile..

Have personally imported HTC HD2 & Palm pre2. Never paid more than 250 bucks..

Correct..OPs cousin should show them their own rule book.

Btw is there a link to noob's guide for custom charges ? I may be having several electronic stuff with me when i come (Tablet, digital photo frame etc) and want to be sure and don't want to be ripped off by those greedy customs (incase the need arises).

Also what are the exceptions, upto what amount one can carry duty free (i guess 25K but is the laptop included in this 25K ??)

^^ Duty free is a fad now.. Although i imported the mobiles for which the value is < 10k, Custom ppl add their own value to it ( 1 x camera, 1 x phone, 1 x mic, 1 x speaker et etc.. and finally ending up with the value around 40 k

.. all just to earn money.. damn it!!! )

#raksrules I have never travelled and so I do not have first hand knowledge. But from what I know if you have the correct documentation of the official laptop then you should be good with you carrying 2 lappies and ur wife carrying one.

A office mate of mine got a Nexus One while coming back for me. He had it in his shirt pocket. He scraped thru without paying customs.

On a side note: Why do you need so many laptops ??

Cutoms in India has got moron, really had bad experience for few last days...

1) Imported 256gb SSD costing $290, paid custom Rs.4,000 for it

2) Ordered Gunnar PC glasses, they marked it as $20, then also the custom came to Rs. 600

3) 2 month ago ordered Astro A40 wireless headset costing 200 Euro. the custom duty came Rs. 11,000, had asked fedex to discard the package, lost my 200 euro

Really India govt system sucks, and once the duty is declared its can't be altered in any condition. There's should be any system to correct the duty amount.

I was stuck in the same situation. I had one MB and another laptop which I bought it in the UK. I was stopped at the customs where in they found both the laptops in my suitcase. But then, I made some excuses that I didn't knew that I have to declare the stuff before leaving the country n stuff. Talked a bit in marathi n the guy left me off.

Don't you have to pay a fine if you don't declare customs and then are caught?

3 Options:

1) Pay the fine + duty that is levied and leave.

2) Forget the seized items.

3) Pay them what they want and leave.

Moral police who are planning to bombard me may please note that I know exactly what you would have done if you were in this situation and I don't give a sh!t! So, please do not try to play the 'holier than thou' game!
<

The moment you try to show them the rules, they will come with excuses for seizing your goods and I can guarantee that! Corruption is the unfortunate evil in our nation and a stronger Lokpal or Anna Hazare are not gonna help anyone.
<

^^ Second that.. India is such a corrupt country, best way is to pay whatever they ask for and leave..

Knowing the local language (Marathi in case of Mumbai) will help you to reduce the amount/completely avoid the amount..

At the end of the day, it's your luck.. as simple as it is.

I imported (through shopandship), not personally carried any so far

Ok guys thanks for providing info n sorry for trouble coz i just came to know that i was pranked by my cousin. N i admitted to him i had a mini heart attack.. lol

Actually he says when he landed 80% of the ppl in his flight were asked to put their bags for scan.. but he was lucky not to get picked n just walkd straight without looking towards them... but was still stopped n questioned by a official regarding the laptop, iphone,ipad.. for a few secs.. which went well
<

so this is where he got the prank idea.. my 4s is safe. Phew!!
