Just got an iphone for a friend for 26K (v1.0.2) it was old version 8gb.

I have few questions.

1. I found that most of it service require Edge to be enabled (web surfing, maps, emailing, youtube, stock, weather etc), how good is Edge & how expensive is this for heavy usage?

2. Is it possible to connect iphone to an existing wifi network & use the web sharing for internet connection? (so use EDGE only when needed)

3.Typing with on screen keyboard is not so easy for someone who has thick fingers, is there any way we can use a stylus with it for SMS.

4. I have heard lot many 3rd party apps are made for iphone, where can I find them.

5. Can we make mp3 ring tones for iphone how?

6. Loading the songs via itunes, is it the only way (I hate it) it forces to sync where as I want manual drag & drop method, anyway to out to do that?

EDGE is expensive but reliable especially if you're travelling. the rates differ from ISP to ISP. For instance, I use Vodafone's Mobile Connect 199 plan. Basically I pay a rental of 199 a month for the service. And then 5 Rs/MB of data transfer. Then there's a 499 plan where you get 500MB free and a 699 plan that provides 1GB of data.

2. Is it possible to connect iphone to an existing wifi network & use the web sharing for internet connection? (so use EDGE only when needed)

Of course! That's why WiFi is present on the iPhone in the first place. You can fully use the Wifi for the internet. Keep EDGE only as a fail-safe wherever WiFi isn't available.

3.Typing with on screen keyboard is not so easy for someone who has thick fingers, is there any way we can use a stylus with it for SMS.

Nope, you can't use a stylus. It simply won't register. This is because iPhones use a capacitative touchscreen so a conductive material is required to complete the circuit. That's why nails don't register on the phone either. Have a look at this wiki entry on capacitative touchscreens. At any rate, there's a learning curve of 2-3 days in order to get the typing right. You might stutter in the beginning but plow ahead. And remember, the idea is not to delete mistakes but go on typing. The iphone's dictionary will automatically correct wrongly spelled words much like the auto-correct feature in MS Word.

4. I have heard lot many 3rd party apps are made for iphone, where can I find them.

Once you've jailbroken your phone, whether from AppSnapp or any other way, there'll be a file called installer.app on your home screen. This gives you access to most of the third-party apps released by the community. You can also go to sites like iPhone Alley and www.modmyifone.com for more information.

5. Can we make mp3 ring tones for iphone how?

Simple! If you're using itunes 7.5 and above, just convert the mp3 file to AAC (m4a extension). There'll be an option in the right-click menu allowing you to do this. Once it's been converted, navigate to the file and change its extension from .m4a to .m4r and drag it into itunes. Now it should show as a ringtone and can be added to the iphone.

6. Loading the songs via itunes, is it the only way (I hate it) it forces to sync where as I want manual drag & drop method, anyway to out to do that?

iTunes 7.6 allows manual drag and drop method. But you still have to use itunes to transfer any multimedia. There might be other programs around which I'm unaware of. Why do you find itunes a hassle though? I love it.

Also, I suggest you raise any further questions in the definitive iphone thread instead of making a new post.
