Is 80ms ping too high for Multiplayer gaming?

I'm not too much into multiplayer gaming, so forgive the ignorance. I was playing Bionic Commando Multiplayer recently & found that my character moves fluidly & the game doesn't stutter either. The only problem is that every other player that have joined for that sessions have jerky movements. I mean they aren't having a proper flow, if you get what I'm saying. I got a ping test done over speedtest.net & found out that my ping is stuck at 80ms.

Now is that too high for Multiplayer online gaming? Is that the reason for the delay in Bionic Commando as well? What's an ideal ping for multiplayer session? What is the cause of such high ping? How do I rectify it?

I'm not sure how what pings I'm getting in the game. The result I posted was from speedtest page. Is that my true ping for gaming as well or does it vary?

I haven't tried any other game yet, so I'm not quite sure if it's isolated to this game itself.

check what's the ping RTT(return turn time) from the server on which you are playing. Ping result on speedtest and other server varies.

@maddy: What kind of settings? Could you please help me out with it?

Also I have installed Hamachi. Is anyone else here playing this game? We could try connecting if possible.

@Sailesh: How do I check the ping RTT for the game I'm playing? It doesn't display any ping or packet information while joining a session.

Dude 80ms is your ping to the speedtest server NOT the gaming server . Goto run >> cmd and ping the server , if on hamachi , right click >> ping and see the ping

less than 100 is very good ..

PS:

dunno what has hapnd with all the ISPs i am using..

all giving pings like 250+ from past 7 days to Starhub servers

ie. MTNL triband, Bsnl, Tata, Nivyah Broadband

Explain the jerky movements u r experiencing?
Lag would be a better word, I suppose. Their movement isn't fluid. I can see them for one sec, they disappear & then some movement & then again the invisible act. :P

How exactly does Hamachi work? I'm not really sure as I'm using it for the first time. Can anyone host a server right now? :ashamed:

Dude maybe they are cheating.I think i heard from 1 of my friends that they use turbo controller or somthing?

Do you guys even know what you are talking about, apart from Manu1991's suggestion, everything is pointless here. Ping = time taken by a packet to complete a round trip (to & fro)in millisec between two nodes.

Ethan DO NOT confuse speedtest ping with your ping on the server. Jerky movement = you have approx 200+ ping. Your ping will differ from server to server. You want to play in the servers where you have ping <200ms. To check your ping in the current server - Just copy the ip of the server<x.x.x.x>. Then in command prompt, do "ping <x.x.x.x>". This will give you an avg ping to the server.

@Evo: Thanks for the explanation. My only problem is that I can't seem to find what server I'm connected to on Bionic Commando. I'm not sure if you have experienced how it's Multiplayer system works, but it doesn't reflect any server name or ping details. You just hit on join for any of the three available game modes & wait for other players to join in. The game commences after the desired amount of people have dropped in. So I can't really see any other information.

I'll check with Project Origins multiplayer possibly by tomorrow. Let's see how that works out. So basically anything above 200ms+ ping is not good, right?

200+ ping is not good as a general rule. however, it's not hard and fast. if a game has good netcode, some times a game is playable around 200 as well. this is specifically for shooters. other games like mmos for example can be played at much higher pings with no significant problems.
