So I bought a rig. Now the thing is that I never had a GPU before. And now I got a pretty good setup. I have no ideas how these things work in the 24/7 setup, but am pretty much afraid of losing anything in this setup. I am still using my old rig for browsing and downloading stuff. Am not comfortable with running my gaming rig with the GPU and all 24/7 for downloading stuff. So am I just being wheezy or its not supposed to be run 24/7. I also took a look at lotsa other solutions and came across this. Now my doubt is should I got for this and spend 20k (only for the CPU) or run my rig at 24/7. Please help me out here. And the reason why I am thinkin of a new CPU is my sista is nagging me for my older machine. She wants it :(

The rig in ur siggy is not wise as a d/l rig since its a power hogger;

A d/l rig demands more space [HDDs], less space [physically occupied], silence and the least pwr consumption;

So anything like an ASUS EEE + a portable hard drive or the Atom + 2 SATA 500GB drives or a Sempron/Cel 420 + SATA drives should do the job well;

if u are using 24/7 or else u power bill will go up

so u need basic low download rig running 24/7 u can get accer pc or assembled u own pc

e2140 or amd 4800

nf 7050 or g780 mo

2 gb ddr2 2 stick

500 gb

19 lcd

and any zebroincs cabinet with psu for 1.3k only

mouse and keyboard any brand combo offer

it help u depend on u budget

or u can get gannu config what he say ;)

OK now space is an issue. Life of my rig's components is an issue. I dun want them to burnout only downloading data day and night. So that is why. Power also becomes and issue becoz the fugging electric bills are touching the sky. So Acer should be the way. Asus Eee PC might not go till the end because it has a 900MHz proccy. Adding 1GB might void its warranty and I am not that good with Linux these days. So I want at least XP to run on it.

How about buying cheap secondhand celeron based laptop, i am using it as downloading option and it won't take much of space and less on electric bill.

+1 for the lappy solution. Get the cheapest lappy that can run XP and put a 500GB HDD in an enclosure and attach it to the lappy. The most power efficient solution IMHO.

Do laptops hog less power than a desktop .. how does it work out ... can anybody point out any statistics.

+1 again for the lappy soln...buy a good portable HD like WD 500 GB My Book Home edition with capacity gauge and u r good to go.....:)

I am using an EeePC + WD 160G Passport and no issues whatsoever. Upgraded the ram to 2gb. This does not void the warranty. Asus said so themselves. Either way I keep the original ram stick just in case. It does not have much resale value in any case.

Also look at the HDD and Bittorrent thread for information on HDD burnout due to torrent downloads.

Ok please dun suggest me Eee PC pls. Now a lappy would have been a good GO; but I dunno which components conk off or how to check if they are good. Also secondly if anything goes wrong I wont know where and how to get stuff and repair it. Thirdly elcheapo lappy = very hard time with hardware. I dun want this. Any other suggestion Fourthly I got a 19" LCD and a KVM switch too so dun want any more monitors around.

Then make a simple VFM download rig .. i wud use the same monitor just to set up the download and then leave it on whole day and night ocassionally connecting the monitor to check on the progress.

Okay , I would suggest you buy a cheap and simple HCL Lappy. A HCL lappy with a Dual core , 1gb ram , 80gb HDD and a DVD writer should cost you around 20k. Now add to this an external 500GB HDD and you are good to go. HCL usually gives 2 years warranty with their laptops so incase you run into any trouble , it will be taken care of. Also in my experience , the customer support of HCL is really good.

As this will primarly be your download rig , an expensive GPU or a better configuration is not required. Anyways you will be able to do almost anything on this Laptop except for gaming.

Lol... looks aside , is it going to run windows xp without any upgrade? :P

I think it will. I have a P3 500Mhz, 256mb sdram system at home happily running XP without probs. I only recently went from 128mb to 256mb ram. It was happily chugging along in 128mb also.:ohyeah:

^^Sure it is and the price of that partly goes for those looks..

May I ask why not an EEE PC when it can run XP??? :S

Or get the Acer Travelmate 4320 [Cel 550 + 512 DDR II + 120GB HDD + DVD-RW + 802.11b/g] Might set u back by 24k odd;

If I were u, I'd get a Cel 420 + nV7050 board + 512MB DDR2 + HDDs accordingly; :D

But that system has 64mb default SD ram :P

And if i were djmykey i would get a cheap laptop. Seriously brother nothing replaces a good cheap laptop. The power consumption is very low , it doesn't require a UPS and its portable. IMO it would make a perfect download rig :)
