Is a format needed?

Ok! I know you've already set your mind to it, that you don't want to format... but i would like to bring to your notice something amazing that you probably don't know about, its call " Windows Easy Transfer" is under your Start Menu.

You can backup everything you want even Programs Files & Applications Except you windows Directory. Your Call!

no man, you will just have to install the chipsets, network, audio driver of you new mobo, assuming you have an external GPU, if not then just install the GPU drivers as well

IINM it is suppose to work in OS migration, there will be no need for it if a simple driver upgrade works.(I believe you are telling him to use it in case of format)

Additionally, from Windows Easy Transfer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The program does not support transferring entire applications themselves and system files such as fonts and drivers.[1] For transferring certain supported applications, Microsoft had planned to release Windows Easy Transfer Companion but never released the final version.[3] Also, for power users, administrators and enterprise computers, a command-line User State Migration Tool (USMT) is available.[4]"

That is why we have portable application creator out there, ThinApp for example.

I will backup everything 1st then disassemble everything. If it boots up correctly its ok. Otherwise i will have to format then i will obviously.

^ it will boot correctly for sure, just you will have some gitch initially, after installing all the driver that will come with your mobo, you will be fine.

The backup method is good, it will be handy if something goes wrong
