Planning to buy Acer 5738G from eBay Deal of The Week.

eBay India: Acer Aspire 5738G Core2Duo T6600 4/320GB WIN7 LED HDMI. (item 280486411023 end time 07-Apr-2010 08:30:00 IST)

1. Is it good for the price?

2. or It's totally outdated?

3. or it's not VFM and there is a better deal on some other model/make?

Don't really looking for some Hi-fi graphics as I rarely play any game.

Guys do consider the gift involved if I buy it from eBay.

Nikon L21 might easily fetch 4k, so the effective price of 5738G would be 32.5k-4k=28.5k

Suggestions :)

yes. I do think it is outdated given that you can get core i3 based laptops for 33k-35k. Today I went with friends to check few laptops in 35k range and best one's I found were Inspiron 15 and Acer Aspire series.

And when I compared the build/keypad/touchpad, Dell was miles ahead of Acer 57xx series. If your use is non-gaming, Dell is definitely the way to go.

If this model doesn't come with a discreet GPU, you better go with Dell Inspiron 15. comes with core i3, 15.6" display and costs 35.5k (taxes included). Also check the newer Acer 5740 series which comes with DX11 GPU and costs around 36k-38k.

So now considering this price you suggest it's a good buy or there is another deal which is more VFM.

I'll update the 1st post also.

rationally thinking, 5738G is pretty good VFM for 28k. but thing this way. you are spending 33k overall.

1) T6600 stands no chance against core i3. Core i3 comes with better features like lower temp, faster DDR3 memory controller, Hyper-V virtualization, better performance-per-watt.

2) The touchpad of 5738 sucks big time and the keypad looks deceptively good and it's just okay.

3) Acer laptops are the less reliable when compared to Dell/HP/Sony/Toshiba. Dell Inspiron is miles ahead of Acer Aspire in build quality. Go to Croma and check for yourself. you will notice the difference.

4) Acer support structure, though is reachable is nowhere near to Dell's in quality.

On the positive side:

1) TCO after the warranty period is much better with Acer. Given that there is an option to extend warranty for Dell and Acer, this doesn't hold much weight.

2) 5738G comes with Radeon dedicated GPU which is good for gaming and HD playback and holds well for gamers.

Acer's build quality is very poor IMO.

T6600 is an age old processor.

i3 laptops are being sold dirt cheap these days, Sony Vaio is being sold at 35k, go figure!

Ok, I had a doubt about the GPU of the laptop, So I called the seller.

He, being a noob in hardware, had no idea about what I was asking about. I was told ATI 512MB, but no idea about what HDxxxx?? After asking multiple times I was told HD4740 :S Which don't exist at all :@

So if someone can please point out, What are the ATI GPU variant of 5738G??

and what possibly this is?

Please reply quickly as I'm going to buy it today only.

I took the chance and bought it on 7th morning and received it today afternoon.

Now I want to know

1. How should I take backup of the factory installed OS image. Size is around 24GB :S (windows 7 Home Premium). Most of the software installed are bloat-ware. :@

2. If I don't take backup, how do I install W7HP again in case of a disaster?

3. Any good freeware to make partition in 64bit?

And yes, forgot to update, It has ATI HD4570 :)

If you can extend your buget a bit i would suggest the 5740G its a very goood laptop and totally value for money..

eBay India: Acer Aspire 5740G 15.6" Win7Premium i3 4GB 320GB 512ATI (item 370356820745 end time 27-Apr-2010 23:55:35 IST)

please care to check price difference. Almost 8k. And only difference is processor.

Rs. 8k can make lots of difference.

Apart from processor, I will say its good buy. But I don't think you can get a i3 laptop for around 28K.

you should first make recovery disk before actually using it using Acer eRecovery Management.

You will need 3 DVD.

There must be some option during boot to restore to factory default.

3. Any good freeware to make partition in 64bit?

Yes, there are many. Like:

EASEUS Partition Master Professional Edition

can you post the link to actual dell Inspiron 15 laptop with i3 processor and win7 home premium within 35K. I am planing to buy one.

The cheapest Inspiron 15 with i3 I can find on Dell India website is of 37K (including delivery fee).

And also lacks win7 premium.
