Laptops Is Acer unreliable?

^ I totally agree that they are VFM and pack a lot of punch. But in the long run, I have come to feel that they are less reliable than Compaq and similar low-end maker models.

@OP - well, i haven't bought any Acer Product till date but few friend of mine have them & to me they are total VFM & when it comes to aftersales then heared that they are good in that too...

Why should i ?. I have spared some of my valuable time and have stated all these by re-collecting it from my memory. Why ?. Because I felt that no-body should suffer like me. On the contrary you say i lied (as if i am paid to do this).

Whether you buy it or not, its upto you. This is my experience. Unless you experience it you will never believe what i say. Go ahead, buy it and be happy...

^dont get upset, naveen didnt say your experience was a lie.

he said, you did not inform the person, whom you sold your lappy ,that it was sent to the service center.

what you do is absolutely your personal desicion, we are all grateful to you for sharing your experience.

thanx again for giving us your feedback, i appreciate it :)

My friends acer laptop now 4 years old is still running without any issues but his hp touchscreen laptop bought 2 years ago for almost 60k died recently.

Congrats mate!

I guess this 5740G is selling like hot cakes out there because of the good configuration for low price.

I know things cannot be generalized but relatively, are people seeing slightly more issues with Acer than other brands?

How's the Acer 4736z and similar current line-up of Acer? I know it's too early to talk about reliability but should one not buy an Acer and go for a Compaq instead owing to higher incidence of problems in the former?

Not at all. I am using an Acer lappie for last 3 years, I havent had any issues with it.

As far as after sales service goes, I think most brands suck! So its better to take good care of your machine and avoid those munks altogether.

Actually the laptop which i sold is in non-working condition only. Moreover i failed to think about the leather bag which came along with it and only after a couple of days i realised it. Could have charged atleast 500-700 for the leather bag. My quote for the laptop itself was low. If i disclose my attempt to service the laptop (and the inability of the service centre to repair it) then definetly either the buyer will ask for rock bottom price or he will reject it.

Its not worth to be too good. I have acted in a manner which is very usual for a seller.

Currently using Acer 5930G from April 2009; had a TFT issue. got resolved within 3 business days; nothing more happened (thankfully). The system runs for around 10+ hours in the weekdays; 14+ hours in the weekends; still without Chill pad the temperature remains bearable

Usage:
Watching movies
Playing games
Multimedia works

i am not saying hp/compaq and hcl are terrible maybe you/people you know were lucky but the general consensus is that they are pretty bad.

I too had a flickering problem with my HP DV5's display within 5-6 months of purchase. Called CC and they did some online diagnostics. Few days later, I got a call from nearby service center informing that my new display has arrived and asked me to take bring my laptop there. If I can't take it to service center, they offered to sent their person. Service center guy told that the display was worth close to 28k. Never imagined something like this would happen.

My friend has a Dell and already the service guy has visited him 3 times and he had faced 5 h/w issues within 10 months of purchase.

Hi,

I don't know why Acer's laptops are so unpopular. Me and one of my cousin has bought it around 1.5 years back and till date we don't have any issue.

Even I really enjoys working on it. Infact I use acer laptop in my office too. Normally I work on it around 8-9 hours daily but never had a problem.

I thinks Acer is doing a really good job in laptops.

X Box 360 > Kolkota

Kolkata is much secured than other places, I stay in pune, its still developing, I mean people still do not follow the rules of consumer court, like if I buy something with full warranty I won't get a replacement, I will have to sit and fight with them where as kolkata I know its much organised. I got a sony Cam and Acer 5920 with a upgraded warranty for 5 years, now the sony cam is not working and has 1 years warranty still left but they are asking me to pay 12K to repair that, they say motherboard is costly and is my fault that it is not working, now acer 5920, am still using it with no issues, but now it has started heating up, it becomes hot every day, but what i liked about acer 5920 is it is ON since I purchased it....I mean it, it must be off only on the days when there were no electricity for the whole day. I just installed win7 yesterday and its working awesome.

Dont go for Acer. A year back my Acer aspire laptop failed to power up and i took it to their service centre. They told me that it will take a day or two to diagonise the issue. Called them the 3rd day, they told still not diagonised fully and said that they will repair it and gave an estimate of 4k max ( without even diagonising it fully !!!) .

After a weeks time they come back saying that it was not possible from them to re-work the motherboard. Then i took back my lappy after paying the diagnositic charge of Rs.300 ( dont know whether they even diagonised it or not ).

Through AD i sold the laptop. The buyer calls me the next day and says that some essential components of the lappy were found missing . This he confirms through a service engineer. He asked me whether i had given the lappy to any service centre anterior to the sale. I told NO. After that i had no contact with him. I think he must have serviced the laptop through some service centre.

So ACER's service centre sucks. Thinking that my lappy is irreparable those cunning brutes have stolen some components. So beware. Dont go for acer products. FYI The one which i had is very sparingly used and it went kaput within 2yrs.

Go for brands like MSI, compaq, dell or sony . Take my words. Avoid ACer lappies.

r u hellboy at tomshardware?

well i am on a acer 4736 and the its abused to be true , 24 x 7 on , its a gem :p for the price nothing came close to it when i took it and even after that a couple of my frends have ended up gettin in the same

What you state is not very amazing. Definetly they are supposed to replace it whatever may be its price provided its within the warranty period.

Well a dealer friend of mine advise me to stay off the whole dv series from HP/Compaq. The reason being that the display goes off all of a sudden without any warning.

The solution is to replace the mobo or the display whatever is faulty. His best pick amongst laptops is Acer. He suggests Dell too; but since Acer has local support and is VFM he prefers Acer.

Sony is all bling and charges for the bling more than the power. Haven't heard anything about Dell systems so cannot really comment on that :)

We bought 2 Dells in the end. We just found it more trustworthy and service is fine I guess.

1. Dell Vostro 1088 for Rs 33,000~
2.1 GHz C2D, 2GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, ATi 4350 Gfx (!). The glitch: sound output via mono speaker, not loud.

2. Dell Studio 14 for ~44k
I find it to be quite a looker, and a decent buy with slot loading DVD drive, a nice screen, fair audio output. Plus comes with 4GB RAM and 64 bit Vista w/ free upgrade to 7. The glitch - it's the model with Intel 4500 GMA graphics. Performs fine though.
