hello friends,

My 3 yr old UPS finally gave up after a long long struggle...

i was thinkin is it a real necessity for computer to hav a UPS… at my place power goes like at least 5 times a day, so whenever d power goes my computer goes pphuffff… does it really effect d components of d system like Mobo, procy or RAM or anything… I wanted to know how many of us here don use UPS for there system, d guys who don use UPS, do face any problem with ur hardware components:huh:

and also plz leave ur vote up there…

Re: UPS query

Apart from offering battery backup, a UPS also protects your computer from power surges/voltage fluctuations.

So when there is such a device in existence, meant to protect your investment (your PC), why think otherwise !? Are you simply going to bank on the general consensus and not think for yourself? Why wait for something to happen, when you can avoid it?

A hard disk is the most susceptible.

Anyway...

As far as brands go, APC tops the list.

A 500VA UPS should be enough for a few minutes of backup.

Re: UPS query

Its always better to use a UPS. UPS were primarily invented to help your work to be saved and then shutdown your computer. In case of sudden power outage if you do not have a UPS and forgot to save your work, then all the time spent on it waste. Thats the primary reason.

If you are using it just to browse and for nothing else i dont really think UPS is needed. In no way i feel this would affect your HDD, because even u switch on or switch off your system the power goes on & off to the HDD and i dont think there is a concept of smooth switching on and smooth switching off.

However there could be some problems with the system files... i would strongly agree with this... so it depends on person to person on how to protect their system

Typically, modern hard disk incorporates certain techniques to park the heads wherever there is a power cut. However, severe power surge or unstable power supply could cause electronic or RW head failure which in terms create platter damage or bad sectors. Generally power cuts may just cause logical data corruption.

So if there is minimal HD activity, nothing much will happen but if it is at its peak, you wouldn't want the R/W head to park abruptly.

That said, why take the risk when you don't need to?

Re: UPS query

Always use ups

if u have inverter at home then u can use it as a ups (regulated o/p). before using inverter check its o/p voltage and it should be less than 240v i am mentioning this because ups at my home o/p 274v.

My friend uses his computer without ups and one due to fluctuations in line psu blows and it take HDD,Motherboard with it.

Re: UPS query

Just buy a very basic entry level UPS like the APC 500VA and configure it to shut down the computer within 5 mins of the power outage. Since at your place power goes atleast 5 times a day, you don't want your PC to go off so many times everyday, it's definitely not good.

Re: UPS query

just had a doubt.I have a 600va ups.will there be any decrease in backup time if i replace my 17inch crt with a 20inch samsung lcd?

Re: UPS query

An LCD consumes less power than a CRT monitor so I am sure the back up time won't decrease if you switch to a 20 inch monitor.

I have a question of my own: How can I reduce the magnetic field created by the UPS and how badly will it affect an LCD TV if placed next to it?

Re: UPS query

Thnx a lot every1 for ur valuable input…

@thetoxicmind

Wow a HDD crush :ashamed: HDD is my life man:( i cant take any risk with it i must get a UPS soon...

@vip

No dude I don hav inverter at home... wow HDD n motherboard:(

@crvinay_4y

surely it wil not decrease d backup time, and i guess it wil increase a bit of ur backup time:D

@prabs

UPS creates magnetic field:huh: never heard of it man... lets c if v get some reply regarding it...

I hav one more query friends, a few days back I read something about d UPS were v can can make energy saver settings like how v do in our laptops were v can set to shutdown the computer after only a few minutes of battery power left, is it possible to do this kind of settings in our normal APC 550VA or 650VA or the Numeric digital UPS's??? I guess those r all standby UPS n wil not provide this feature…

and I also hate that irritating beep beep sounds after d power goes… does this APC and numeric digital UPS’s does d same thing??? Is there any way to get rid of this irritating sound…

The backup time will infact INCREASE and not decrease. :cool2:

Haven't heard of such an issue. It shouldn't pose a problem either.

If you are really worried, simply place the UPS further away.

Found this though...

The Line-Interactive UPS is similar in operation to a Standby UPS, but with the addition of a multi-tap variable-voltage autotransformer. This is a special type of electrical transformer that can add or subtract powered coils of wire, thereby increasing or decreasing the magnetic field and the output voltage of the transformer.

Re: UPS query

hey guys which one would b a better option

APC 650VA for 2.8k (in which v hav d USB feature, were d UPS works how d batteries work in Laptops which goes to standby mode whn d power in UPS too low) or

APC 550VA for 1.8k (d normal UPS) or

Numeric digital 600VA for 1.5k (d normal UPS)

is 1k worth investing on APC 650VA rather than gng for 550VAor Numeric 600VA???

and wat about d beep sound in all this above UPS's... do v get dat beep sounds after d power goes...

Re: UPS query

Hey, I just got a Microtek 800VA UPS with Double Battery Backup. Pretty reliable, my 2-3 friends are using it since 3-4 years and getting a decent backup of over 1 hr with 17" CRT Monitor. I got it for Rs. 2500/-

Re: UPS query

^^^
wow 1hr of backup with 800VA pretty amazing man :cool2:
does dis UPS hav a software monitoring in which UPS status can be communicated to the OS...

has anyone else used this Microtek 800VA UPS???
is it much better than APC 650VA???

Well, i would suggest to go for the APC over the Microtek anyday.

And a Microtek 800VA would never give an hour of backup unless its a atom PC or something. :bleh:

The APC 650VA is the best option out of all of these. It give sufficient backup, auto shutdown, can remove the beeps if you like it and basically suitable for a 24x7 download rig as well.
The experience i had with Microtek 800VA and Corsair VX450 was horrible and finally i got the refund from Microtek (since they were unable to fix the issue) and then i went for the APC 650VA which is running fine even in extreme voltage conditions existing in my home :ohyeah:.

So, definitely i would recommend the APC 650VA over any other UPS in this range. :)

@prabs,
i had kept my old APC 500VA near my LCD for two years and nothing happened, so i guess its safe to assume that there are no such things as magnetic field of the UPS and even if it is dere, it probably does not affect anything. :)

thanks a lot for all your replies friends i finally got a APC BackUPS ES650VA for 2.9k today

it works pretty well, it gives me a backup of almost 20 min with fully charged batteries...

the USB feature and software feature is awesome, i really loved it...
