One of friend who has opted for overseas studies has bought an ICICI student insurance which provides cover against unexpected medical and non-medical expenses during his study travel abroad. Is it obligatory to buy student insurance for students who pursue higher education abroad.?plz guide me

Its better. But I guess ,most of the university has some kind of insurance for international student.checkout there website

It is obligatory to buy insurance. It is NOT however obligatory to do so from the university itself. They are generally flexible enough to allow you to buy your own plans as long as they satisfy the specified requirements of the uni in question.

Some of the universities don't accept health insurances from icici lomabard, bajaj allianz etc.

Do check with them before purchasing an insurance from India.

Even if you are a business traveler, having insurance is a must today, to get the visa even. So all in all, your answer is Yes, go get it!
