Hi all planning to upgrade to SSD. Just had few concern is it worth upgrading to SSD NOW currently using 1 tb caviar black for boot up and was thinking of getting wd velo raptor or ssd . Just confused over performance leap and the price i would be paying..for the performance. kindly advice..either will get wd velo or patriot torq.

Not at all worthy to go for SSD right now. The price is too high and performance is not worth the heavy extra price.

For you, perhaps yes. For the common man who owns a decent machine, NO. Time's not ripe yet to own one.

you have a nice rig already so i would say, yes, get one now (64gb) just to check it out and be amazed :D

but if you are hesitant for any reason (budget or perf/tech wise) then wait til end-2010 (dont even buy velo in the mean time!) before you buy an SSD - by then more stable/faster/cheaper models will be available...

btw when i say "stable" - win7 works great now, linux has problems (and macosx too according to crucial.com forum users) but that will be fixed soon enough...

***yeah !!looking at people reviews i really want to try ssd but later on...just thinking like spending 13k and then something new comes out..i will end up selling and again money waste so..i guess i should wait **or get raptor for time being ..or thats waste 2 lol

hmmm.. i guess we should wait for new SSD firmware to come out and the prices will also drop so i guess 150 gb or 300 gb is fine ..

Unless you are using all that hard drive space, you could sell one of your green edition drive, get another black and roll on RAID-0. It'll give you a very decent performance bump and cost close to nothing.

Get one. Give in to the temptation. :P

And yeah, it makes a difference. Boots much much quicker. You'll notice an improvement in load times for games. (I noticed it for Anno 1404 and Mass Effect, though there is no noticeable frame rate improvement). The whole system feels like you are running off a fresh install all the time.

[Using X25-M 80GB G2 with Windows 7 with TRIM enabled]

i got one just last month and i absolutely love it.. been using ti since 3weeks+ now no issues.. i dont ever see myself goin back 2 platter drivers.. the speed is just insaneee.. everything is snappy. this hasta be the single most effective upgrade ive ever done.. pc's and laptops alike.. it is a must for laptop users. i say if u have the $$$ go for it . :ohyeah:

If you've got the money then theres nothing better than the Intel G2 drives.

13k is a lot of money to be spending on a 80 gig drive though.

i too was contemplating getting raptor (then velocipraptor when it came out) but held patience til i got a Crucial M225 128gb model a couple of weeks ago :D imo worth the cost if you are a "need for speed" kinda person otherwise just wait for a year...

note that a year later you will have to buy "lower perf" drives which dont hit agains sata 3 gbps limit - which will be cheaper anyway... if you want best perf next year you need to upgrade mobo which supports sata 6 gbps - unless you already have it...

There is.
It's called OCZ Vertex Pro 2 (Sandforce chipset)

missing the point... its not the storage space, its the S.P.E.E.D. (3x thoughput and 1/100x latency over HDD)

check out these 2 HDTach images, first one an HDD, second my SSD:

The burst speed on the SSD is an anomaly.. check out sequential/average read... and most juicy (for me at least) is the 0.1 ms seek/latency compared to roughly 100x (10+ ms) that of an HDD

Installing Kubuntu Linux from Corsair Voyager GT pen drive took me over 5 min with my HDD, now it takes under 3 min (about half the time)...

Windows7 bootup down from 25 sec to 15 sec...

stuff like that...

Which won't be out for another 3-4 months. And there hasn't been any indication of the price.

From Anandtech's preview

The controller and product both look very good. The only concern for the majority of users seems to be price. For the enterprise market I doubt it’ll be much of an issue. The Vertex 2 Pro should come in cheaper than Intel’s X25-E in a cost per GB sense, but for high end desktop and notebook users it may be a tough pill to swallow.

Also, Intel plans to have 'mid year' refresh. So waiting 3-4 months may be your best bet :P

Edit: I just noticed in the preview. Its random read performance is still below the Intel G2. Actually, random read performance is lower than Intel G1. Almost gave me buyer's remorse till I saw that.

I agree that SSD's are lightyears ahead of standard disks when it comes to performance. The new TRIM enabled firmmware seems to have eradicated the eventual slowing of the disks too.

In the end it comes down to wether you're comfortable paying 13k for an 80 gig disk that blows away your current HDD.

I for one am not; simply because i'm holding out until MLC flash prices drop to levels where the price to performance ratio becomes reasonable.

I'd say once you can but a 256GB disk for under 250 USD is when i'll be ready to take the plunge.

xanthor !!! truly said..for the price is way too exp !!i should better wait for few months..till higher capaicity prices drop and then buy it
