Graphic Cards Is my 9800Pro dying...?

It looks like my 9800Pro is dying. Its over 2 years old, r360 core, as5 applied. Never overclocked, almost always underclocked.

Weird artifacts in all games, 3dmark05, even google earth. Screenies attached.

Ive tried different drivers, but the driver test after reboot fails, so i have to manually load drivers thru device manager. SmartGart tests show the agp reads/writes to be off, and even at 4x they dont work. Now i dont have smartgart since the drivers have been loaded manually. Tried running at stock 380/340, tried 320/320....tried diff clocks.

I think the artifaction is strange, and tracerbullet agrees. I think there are 3 possibilities:

1 - Card is dying.

2 - Card is heating up, i can try reapplying some AS5 to it, but i dont see why it would happen when abt a year back i already gave it some AS5 lovin'!

3 - My A7N8X-E is a board i bought recently from sunnyboi, and its northbridge heatsink has loose, not in contact with the NorthBridge nf2 chipset. Can that be heating up and be the problem? (Anyone got spare NB heatsink/cooler?)

I really dont want to go in for a new AGP card right now! Any help much appreciated.

i think ur card is dying or better say its already dead :p .....

anyways chk the card on some other comp and report back .....

and 9800P were not very long lasters ..... i have seen many dead 9800P ..... but still chk it out on different comp .....

My 9800Pro too was suffering from thing like artifacting and lines on the desktop screen. Good news! It wasn't dead, just the PSU had become too weak for maybe because of amperage loss with age to take the load.

I would suggest jut reinsert the card, reinstall windows with all drivers and try again. Though this may not correct it, it just might. It is optional to do this only if you are ready to invest the time irrespective of the fact whether you get results or not.

But atleast try the card with a better PSU. It may solve the problem. In case it doesn't check on another computer and finally send for RMA.

Er ok a few more questions :p

how long does it take for the card to artifact does it artifact immediately or after some time ?

Did u check the agp voltage in the bios ? or tried resetting the bios to stock

the card is artifacting coz its gettin hot (DUH!) i had similar problmes with my 9600 pro .... but that was under some er insane overclocking conditions (core at 570 from 400 on stock cooling :ashamed:) in that case the Agp voltage was up from 1.5 to 1.7 and the card didnt take voltage that well after a long period..so jus chk the agp voltage... try flashing the card's bios, mobo's bios ....Unfortunately 9800pros have a high kaput rate so it might jus be ur card dying but it aint all over as yet..i suspect a little too much voltage ... seems like that at least .. :)

My 9800pro was acting in a similar manner, turned out that the card was overheating, just applied some as5 and the card was back to normal. The orignal thermal paste on the card had sort of dried up and there was little contact between the heatsink and the core. So i'd suggest u to just try some as5 on it again.

1)Check the PSU rail voltages under load.......thers a detailed guide sunnyboi posted long time back....

2) Monitor gpu temperature usig rivatuner....

Dont think that 9800pro has temperature sensors, u cud try with a different psu ...if that doesnt work either then i guess ur 9800 is either dead or gonna be dead soon :(

The 9600pro doesn't use as much power as a 9800pro, would be best to try out your 9800 on ur friends mobo and psu ...i.e if he permits...will give you a definate answer.
