I have been trying to log onto STEAM for installing my Dawn of War II and Chaos Rising but have always been stopped by the update process which displays " STEAM is currently unavailable please try later"

have tried from an AIRTEL connection in Bangalore and BSNL in Gandhinagar and same error in both what can the issue be please help

Is this your first time in Steam? If no, since when did it start occurring? I logged in yesterday night to play Red Faction, it was fine then...

1. Is your firewall blocking Steam? Allow Steam as a trusted application in your firewall.
2. Are you running applications like PeerGuardian? Close these applications before opening steam.

you have not mentioned your OS. Steam for me works flawless on XP 64 though never complete installation in Win7 64 irrespective any thing.

it work perfectly on window 7 64Bit i use .

OP it seams something is blocking steam connection

I am using Windows XP 32 bit in Gandhinagar and in Bangalore it was Vista Home Premium 32 bit on a laptop I am not so sure about the Firewall issue I will tweak and tell

Thank You :)

In XP the Firewall is off and I am not using any third party app like Peer Gaurdian

Reinstalled STEAM now updating properly :D

Nothing like a reinstall :)

It works on Win 7 64 bit Ultimate Edition quite well, never ran into any connection issues...

You see college -- Bangalore

and Home ( currently ) -- Gandhinagar so and I bought the games in Gandhinagar in Bangalore it was a friends lappy

Even I got this error first time I installed Steam, seems like the servers were unavailable. Tried the next day and everything was working fine.

Something strange on Steam I get reset Password mail even when I have not requested for one :P
Dude, someone is definitely trying to hack your account. Reset the password for Steam and the email id which is linked to Steam.

Am running into some issues while using steam recently. Especially while downloading the games.
Yesterday I was downloading Witcher Enhanced Edition, it's whopping 15GB! Download was 63% done, after restarting Steam. Download resumed from 52%!
Basically Steam deleted around 2Gig of downloaded game data, during its restart.

Sorry to bump this.

But I have the original AVP disc. I put in disc 1. Steam installed. Then it tried to update. Nothing is happening. I stops after 2-3 minutes (at 0%). My AVG is turned off, so is the Windows default firewall. I deleted the ClientRegistry.blob file also. Still the same thing. Now what..?

I had the same issue with Steam while trying to get Alien Swarm recently. I tried all sorts of troubleshooting until I finally stumbled across a post which explained how to edit the ClientRegistry.blob file and get Steam to update. I'll try to get the site for you and if possible layout the procedure. Hang in there. That is one game you wouldn't want to miss.

PS: On a side note, Steam's download speed sucks. It fluctuates like hell. I started downloading Kane & Lynch 2 demo at 10:46PM and it's 12:35AM now and it has only downloaded 700MB. My connection speed is 1Mbps and at this rate, I should have been done by now. The total download is around 1.4GB.

^^

Thanks Ethan. Well last night at 12:15 AM, the client updated. Yes, it is quite slow. Subsequently today morning I installed the game, and it was auto - patched. Overall the DRM engine is quite painful, and many times I found it hanging/not responding. Sad, there is no other way to launch the game. Just started the marine campaign. Played 5-6 minutes, before jetting for office.

Do give the site you mentioned. Would be good for future reference.
