Everyone who has been installing Steam only recently seems to be facing these update issues. While everyone who has it installed for months is doing fine.
Wonder if it's something they screwed in the hefty Steam revamp last month.

Sorry to bump this.

But I have the original AVP disc. I put in disc 1. Steam installed. Then it tried to update. Nothing is happening. I stops after 2-3 minutes (at 0%). My AVG is turned off, so is the Windows default firewall. I deleted the ClientRegistry.blob file also. Still the same thing. Now what..?

I noticed you are running Win7, I am facing exact same status when steam updates itslef on Win7, though things works well on XP64.

It updated fine on Win7, but took numerous attempts -- like 40-45.
