Hi Guyz ,

I Never ever hibernate my system coz i read somewhere that it can cause harm to RAM etc etc ! But One of my friend speaks the other way , he says that there is no harm watsoever in hibernating the system, and that he has been doing that since over an year and has no problems ! So I am here to ask the Tech Gurus , is there any harm in hibernating the system ? :(

So Does it mean that I can Hibernate my system for as long as I want say....3-4 days or even more ? Actually I asked this question to my My computer Sir at the college and wat he said was that if we hibernate the system the motherboard , harddisk etc will be switched off but the RAM will still be in use, which in turn could damage RAM !

never ever trust computer sirs fully.

LOL thats suspend. Hibernation writes the image of memory to disk and shuts down... like a normal shutdown.

ur computer sir is totally wrong.....

when u hibernate ur system, the current instance of windows(with all programs that are open) would be written to ur hardisk... and the machine will shutdown... the next time u start windows ur system would check if the machine had been hibernated in the previous run and would load it....

there would be no damage whatsoever.... i have been using it for long time and havent had a problem even once....

and also almost all laptops hibernate when u fold them... u can leave ur hibernated sys for a month and switch it on... the instance that was hibernated would load...

Really I did'nt Know That ! Do all Of U Guyz Hibernate ? If Its That efficient then why is there an option of shutdown ?

because not all people have free space on there HDD's.

^^Cos at times you need to shut down to update software/hardware/drivers etc :P. I hibernate my laptop maybe 5-6 times a day, maybe more. According to your dude's explanation, my laptop shud have gone "kaput" by now :).

i have configured the power button in cabinet for hibernating... so if i wanted to take a small break say for 20min or so i would just press the power button....

sometimes i hibernate because i hate waiting for the system to start up...

^^Udit - i think hibernating wud take 200-300MB not more... so i think most of us can use it...

Well, shutdown is important when u want to add new hardware and/or reinstall critical drivers such as graphics/chipset etc. When u hibernate the system, its akin to 'pause'ing the OS.When ever the OS recovers frm hibernation,it simple carrys on the work it wasdoing at the time of hibernation.

If u change H/W,the system won't detect the H/W untill u RESTART the system (not hibernate). So in daily use,u can and IMO should use hibernation as it greatly improves the OS load times.Try it urself and u'd be amazed at the speed with which the system is restored.

EDIT:Yes,hibernation space=RAM size exactly as the RAM is dumped into the HDD.

i use hibernate very frequently ..... even my UPS software is set to hibernate rather than switch off ..... have't seen any problems till date .... one i got blue screen while switching back from hibernate but after the restart comp was working just fine maybe there was some other error ...
