Hibernation is good : -

1) do it when u r in hurry / lazy to close all apps (save...etc)
2) do it when u r playing a game that does not support saving...:ohyeah:
3) dont do it when u have updates divers/critical files (atleast restart once )
4) It takes exactly same size as the physical ram.
5) when u shutdown the ram contents are stored in the file & the regular shutdown sequence is initiated.
6) when u boot a system after it was hybernised, it will check the file { this happens everytime u start the os) if there is any records .. if it finds it'll load it
7) once u have resumed from the hibernation , after all the contents are loaded the file is truncated , meaning u have to hibernate again...it wont resume again automatically.
p.s : i hardly shutdown my pc....i always hibernate it..:)
so no problems whatsoever. :D

Suspend can cause harm to hard drives if you wake up your pc immediately after it has gone to sleep.
Hibernate is essentially a shutdown and completely safe.

What I do is make a power scheme to simply turn off the monitor after 10min.
Whenever I want to leave, I just winkey+L and leave.

Chaos, are you sure you hibernate? I thought that state in a laptop was mostly a standby (shut the lid), with an instant on.

In any case, modern computers are built to run continuously for months, so even if you left your comp in standby, it would not hurt it.

If you hibernate regularly, it's advisable to do proper shut downs once in a while so your system caches etc are refreshed regularly.

After reading this thread - I said why not hibernate instead of shutting my computer which i do twice a day - so this moring I hibernated the system for the firat time at around 9am when I had to go out for a few hours - I got back at around 4 pm and started my system off the hibernate ..... DISASTER !!!

There were all sorts of problems - the first was that my 1024 ram suddenly started getting reported as 1023 and that too after half a minute - the boot process stopped for half a minute before the amount of ram was reported on the screen !! Then my Logitech Cordless Destop was not getting recognised no matter how many times I pressed the connect buttons :@ I had to attach a MS corded keyboard and mouse. Then I kept getting a message from the APC Powerchute software that the UPS was not found. Man ..... if this Logitech Cordless Desktop gets disconnected it becomes a major problem as you need a keyboard or mouse to install the software and you cannot do that as there is no access to these input devices :@

I put on my thinking cap and guessed that the problem could be a corrupted BIOS and/or a corrupted XP or RAM gone bad. I thought - NO PROBLEM - restore a fresh morning backup file and XP should be fine - it was fine after the restore as far as the Cordless keyboard mouse was concerned - now to reflash the BIOS - that turned out to be a major issue as I ALWAYS flash the BIOS from a USB HDD and now these drives were not getting recognised - the USB ports had got messed up during the Hibernate process. So booted from a 98SE startup CD and got access to a USB HDD which was setup with Win98SE and from this HDD I could after a lot of time get access to AFUDOS and the BIOS file as this USB HDD was not getting recognised. Flash went thru fine - went thru the rigmaroll of removing the MoBo battery and clearing CMOS via the jumper - got back the USB devices to work fine - now the APC UPS softwae was left to be worked on - NADA - cannot get this to run as there seems to be a problem with the cable or the UPS itself :( after 2 hours of trying various suggestions from APC's Troubleshooting FAQ's I concluded that either the connect cable is KAPUT or something in the electronics of the UPS is GOODBYE. I found that whenever the UPS's cable was connected to the USB port the system stops for half a minute for the amount of ram to be displayed on screen.

This has been a half a day wasted just because I ran Hibernate. If I did not have my backup image of the morning I would have been up the proverbial creek without a paddle :( Long Live the Life Saver ..... Acronis True Image .... it has got me out of these type of bad situations a number of times.

END OF RAMBLING :P

i have also this problem eazy (i also use hibarnation feature a lot of itme) .... when i connect MX700 mouse in the USB post then after every 2-3 minutes there will be a pop up message that the "connection to the UPS is lost" .... then after 10-15 secs again connection will be backed up ....

i tried many things including changing the UPS but still it exists .... amybe its a driver issue between the logitech mouse and APC UPS ....

if u know any remedy please tell me ...

I am not an expert on these things I just try out all sorts of nonsense solutions and I guess I just get lucky most of the time.... like right now !! :) I have just switched on the computer reinstalled Powerchute 2 and everything is now A-OK !!! Not a problem with the system. I have a Logitech MX 600 cordless mouse - but I dont think that had anything to do with my problem. I think I had a BIOS corruption of some sort.

Are you using APC's Powerchute 2 ? This version is supposed to have got rid of most of the bugs.

Go thru the IRQ's being shared and see what other device is on the same IRQ as the UPS - I know this is not supposed to be a problem in XP but I sleep much better knowing that the IRQ of the UPS is not being shared with some other heavy resource using device. This is what I meant with what I said earlier - NONSENSE SOLUTION :)

Yeah, I had a problem once after hibernating. The first time in months. Had to reinstall XP as half a dozen files were marked missing, and yes, I tried all recovery options. All this was 3 days away from my practical exams too!!!!!

Go to Device Manager and on top under View select "Resources by Type" and here you will find the IRQ option. But keep in mind this may not be an answer to your problem :)

@Bluffmaster ..... HA HA !!! ... of course I will run Hibernate again .... when Vista comes out :D

bluffmaster, when your master ji told u that the ram ji remains in use when u hibernate, why didnt u just pullout the RAM sticks and put them back in after hibernating. see if you were still able to hibernate completely. :D
