IT Employees - How Tough Is Your Job?

I have been lucky so far in IT. worked in big IT MNC's - 0utfosys, HP, TCS. Landed up in a good profile project in 0utfy, so was able to sell that to a Premier B school interview panel, to HP and later to TCS. Have 4 odd years of workex, but earn more and work less than the typical workex guy (or 6 year, if you include my MBA too). It matters if you want more, money or a life :p Of course, Onsite changes everything. B.Tech is becoming increasingly commoditized, and as companies try to scale non linearly, oppurtunities for entry level folks will become less and less. People who got into IT in the 90's had it good. My seniors more or less had a run of good luck. Our batch had mixed luck.
Even I wasnt so luck with H1B - lets see if that changes. My sister hates her job - she's stuck in support, and most of the people around here seem to be working in support of rather mundane work. Knowing how we plan to expand, I dont see it becoming better for entry level hires in big organizations. You're better off in a mid tier firm where you can get a better profile. But knowing where to go is the uphill battle, because for a fresher, its often hard to make sense of all this info, and making a few calls - for example people who went with SAP cashed out much better than people who went with Oracle ERP... things like that.

Good luck!

if you choose IT, you should mentally prepare for retirement at max 40 yrs..not everybody can be a manager...as you gain more experience in terms of years, its difficult for companies to position you in projects.

so, you need to upgrade your skill set as and when possible and according to market.

once you go beyond programmer level and lead level you need to do many certifications to be in competition for manager post.

Goodluck ...

It seems OP is scared to work anything more than 12 hours if you want stress free life join a govt sector job.

So, working for more than 12 hours a day should be accepted?

I am totally against working for long hours. Once in a while is ok with project requirements but not always. But some managers are such a$$h0les that they want their subordinates to stay beyond normal hours always and they themselves do that. I had a friend in my company who left only because of this.
I myself spend 12 Hours out of the house but a lot as well goes in traveling which is don't like at all.
I have to leave everyday at 7:25 from my home and come back only at 7 PM as the bus leaves at 6 only. I detest driving my bike due to traffic and frankly i am scared to do so now.

Use bicycle? If the office is less than 10km it's pretty easy, around 15km is also OK.

Onsite is even more torturous at times, especially if you are sent to US.
Coordinating with Offshore becomes PITA.
I remember one of the clients tortured my Onsite Lead so much, that he was so sacred. He used to say that if we have any doubts, we could wake her up at any time in the night. It used to happen that we used to end up calling her at her 3:00AM or 4:00AM and all.

Tried that and was not able to work it out. Moreover i do not take bike as i am scared of the way others are driving. You have to come to Hinjewadi and the roads approaching to see this.
Cycle is totally out of question here.

But you would have to go take a shower there.
Also it would be risky to ride back in the night.

Yes,first of all i cannot wear my formals and come on bicycle, need to wear something else and yes take a shower which would cost me additional 300 a month as it involves taking health club membership here in my office.
And night i am surely going to be hit by some vehicle and even in day time due to super rash driving here.

Yes i know how they drive in Hinjewadi :D

At the very least, life in IT will make you re-evaluate the path of your life in future! :)
Something one doesnt give much thought while at college!

Don't know much about the traffic condition there, but cycling is worth it if you can, even if you would have to shower. After a few months, you would actually build up your cardio and can cycle easily without even sweating. At night you should always use lights, check out bums-on-the-saddle.

If you join small companies, you will get to learn a lot (technology wise), but then, they will make you work like anything (like 12 hrs/day)

Big companies have multiple projects - each project is a different company by itself. You may not get to learn all the latest technologies since big clients are usually on out dated, tried and tested technology.
Here, if you land up in a good project, then life is pretty good, Monday to Friday working, 8hr/day.
But, if you land up in a bad project, then its like 12hr/day work and regular weekend work tooo. So it all depends on the project!!!

I am working in a IT company starting with T :bleh::bleh: and I absolutely hate it, 1 year back whatever I had imagined reg this company is absolutely bs and all thanks to my manager and the shitty regional politics goes on around. But there are few of my college batch mates enjoying in the same company due to the work and manager combo they are lucky to have, if you need some advice , study hard, join some small startups and learn like crazy, 2 years down the lane do your masters , get the f out of from IT. IT is a decaying industry where very few people actually get to test out their knowledge and skill-sets, most of the projects that I see coming (if at all) around is mundane , boring to the core.

Everyone should be scared of working more than 12 hours per day. Easy route to let go of your health - physical and mental. You spend 12 hours at work, 8 hours for sleep and another hour commuting, what time do you have left for yourself? What is the point of earning money when you have no time to spend it?

It's not so straightforward that you can claim small company = 12 hour day. It is true that you have to pull your weight and be ready to take up any kind of work that comes around. I work in a small company (<10 people). We only work 9 hours a day, and that includes an hour off for lunch.

Do not really know. What ever inputs you get from here, never ever get into a company culture. Be what you are, and as a person respect your privacy and personal life, then only the company which gives you salary will do the same. If once in a while you manager asks you to sit for 12 hours to complete a client escalation, cool. But if you feel like coming home, and sleeping or writing posts on TE, choose us.

:)

Which company do u work for ? If you apply what your recommending especially in 1-2 years of career then bye bye career , I have seen people being on site for 3-4 years but still dont know anything since most of people go onsite for dirty work seriously i have seen people radio button changes by working on site what career progression they have = 0 , though u could become project manager by sticking to same firm or face the challenge in open market because the day that firm goes down you would in a hell. The only way to be healthy and wealthy is keep pushing your self

I thought Software and Service based are two different categories under IT. So obviously I did not know IT!=Software.

So IT company always means service based ?
