hi there

i've done diploma in computers and am eligible for direct second year admission to the computer engg and IT engg. degree courses (Mumbai University).

which one according to u is a better option and why?

thanks

if u ask me....i would suggest it...i have done comp enggr.......1st 2yrs both have same subjects(it has 1-2 xtra subjects)...also cryptography and sys security stuffs r therein it..which r most demanding stuffs.......

but most importantly...... there r cooler chics in It...than in comp.......when u r bored in lectures u can admire there beauty......whereas in comp i was crying at my position

I am not telling this specific to ur univ but in general in comp engg u deal with core subjects in computers like compilers n stuff. In IT the focus is more on application oriented training. Hope this helps :)

@magnet...lol I dont think he would like to take a branch for chicks sake ;) good info though :)

The curricullum is somewhat same in both COMP and IT....What COMPS do in one semster The ITs do it in the next semester and vice versa....According to me both are good enough....There is just a shuffling of subjects....There are some different subjects but not many....BUt I would suggest you to take COMPs only cos I somehow found the sujects more organized in COMP syllabus....HOp this helps...

Im studying IT and in our university, both CSE and IT are same subject at core ..CSE has only 4 different papers. they learn computer architecture, which IT people dont....
basically for jobs and campussing ..in our college IT and CSE guys both get same preferences :)

and hot chicks,in IT, damn not in my college :(

btw my info is related with mumbai only.........

and regarding IT stuff... the same chpters Comp ppl too have jus 1-2 chapters added or deleted..........

in all no big difference frm both.........

but if u thinking to take comp considering u would b taught h/w...4get that........i took same with that mindset........and i was totally let down

edit:::this reply is after seeing scarezebra reply below......

quite true whts the need of electrical networks, edc, pcom which has no relation to comp and it.........

digital logic is the only usefull subject i guess in 2nd year.....keeping aside programming stuffs(which is obvious)

Ya...Another irritating thing is that u r taught a lot of ELECTRONICS related stuff in both COMP/IT......Thats not just in the first year...ven in the second and third year...

frankly speaking both suck! There is absence/prescence of certain subjects in both the degrees and none of which makes even a little difference to ur post-academic life. You have different electives for both the degrees and a some point cruising along u realize that the option u selected for ur increasing ur knowledge was worth no more than waste (u cud learn better on tech forums like TE!), and the ppl who u used to laugh at for selecting sm obsolete topic are faring better than you!! :bleh:

MU is crap! :@ and that shit-mentality-quotient has surely increased in current yrs with an instance of a final yr paper set by keepin 20% in-syllabi questions and rest on ur GK! end result: 20 marks grace to each student irrelevant of their performance!! :S

I may sound nasty but m quite pissed of seeing the proceedings of the most in-demand university of India which is rated quite high by top-companies

in terms of placement. But as its fate for you i think its appropriate to check out where ur frendz are rushing and u can go wid them to either of the degrees. atleast u wil have smone to crib abt ur experinces while enduring HeLL!! :P

Honestly it does not matter.

Give your preference to better college insted. College like D.J sanghvi, thadomal have excellent placements. So give your preference to college. Trust me, the different in job opportunity varies widely with the standard of college.

Both cources are equal in the end and you will get mostly same job offeres for both fields.

BTW results of diploma out??? And you are from annual pattern or sem?

And no matter what people say, MU is MU :P

MU counts.

I am doing IT engg and the subjects are almost the same, some few electives here and there. The difference in the placements is not much either.

Practically no difference between the two. Only diff is probably in the final year where CS and IT differ in 2 or 3 papers. IT will have some Application oriented subjects as compared to CS.

@NEurodrOne

Well frankly speaking in Engineering, there is nothing called syllabus. In a real engineering course, emphasis is on learning by self exploration. The place where I studied, we didn't even have examinations in a few courses. The grade in the course was totally dependent on what you achieved in the end of it. (Read papers/projects etc) This exam mentality is what is screwing up MU and a few other similar ones elsewhere. Just mugging up for the exams is not gonna give you an iota of knowledge. Its all about trying it out yourself and experimentation. Also learning from TE or any other such website is not gonna get you academic knowledge... its more about the latest tech/hype than anything else.

Hey Chaos,

It seems u r one of the lucky ones not to tolerate disgusting set of workings of one-of-India's most prestigious university. The point u implied on emphasis is on learning by self exploration is exactly what MU lacks! I had taken admission to MU in comp engg by studying its electives which i found fascinating, and i had compared it to all other branches except IT (complascency :ashamed: ). Thus began my journey thru and soon in my first month itself i realized that my fellow collegues are not even aware of some basic fundamentals of programming! Forget that, i befriended lotta seniors ( post-ragging! :D) and then came to know that these ppl strive only for the degree (marx marx marx) not for real engineering by trying it out and experimentation as u pointed out!

The subjects are less taught in coll and ur learning of the subject (curriculum-based) is bydefault based on the classes u attend. The subjects were (are!) studied by mugging up 100 page notes and those who mugs up the best gets the highest of marks! Also dissipation of marks to you is directly proportional to ur positive influence on the subject prof. I bet u wont hear a diff story from any MU passed out engg.! :@ NOONE gives a crap of wt u know or not about that sub-matter, if u have mugged up ignorantly , but properly ,u are amongst the proud grp of ppl that call themselves the 'toppers'! :cool2:

Now this was certainly a shock to me and i thot i landed up in a doomed college when i came to realize that most of the colleges function in same way i struck upon a revelation that its not our coll but MU to blame!! I decided let this all go to hell if i find a compatible group i ll work wid them for my and their betterment or else wil continue alone, but will not be in this mugging shit. Well Chaos, we have a mini-project in 4th sem for subject called DBMS, I made a Call-centre software :ohyeah: for it where DBMS was a miniscule integration compared to whole program! While others were being asked abt the code, i was asked the cost for which i wud sell the s/w! :) This shud clearly ascertain that sm pointers, made by u above, were a bit misdirected, not ur fault tho, guess i wud have done the same thing if i was in sm place like IIT ! :)

I wish this cud all change for better and if i cud make any diff to it i certainly wud! But as Funky said howeva deep-shit it may be MU counts(bitter truth)!!! ..Btw Chaos do u know why Microsoft never migrates for placement to MU ? ..PM me will introduce u to Chris Mundie! ;)

@NEurodrOne: your story reminds me of my B.Tech days where we had a similar situation. People were supposed to mug up the text and replicate it exactly in the exams. My system of study has always been learn by self and write what you understood and because of this I did not get very good marks in most of the exams in my B.Tech. I did not care too much about it. Learning still counts for your future.

After I joined for M.Tech at IIIT-A, the system was completely different and concentration was more on the knowledge you gain than on how much you of the books you have byheart. I had cleared most of my papers with A+ grade without so much as opening a book before the exam. Major part of the evaluation is based on the Projects and Term Papers.

Even after I joined the Job the learn by self attitude comes very handy and I had very good recognition in my company because of it.

I assure you that the knowledge you gain now will help you in your future if not now. No need for you to be so disappointed about it.

WHOOW! ..now that sure is encouraging man! me bored of this crap anyways.. plannin to do GRE and zoom off! and main prob is my acads are not even avg. teme LN how much is the exact value of ur final yr project in todays placement scenario?? What if sm breakthru is achieved at this stage will it make a diff in job-gaining?? coz all i hear is that it isnt even considered even during ur off-campus! is it true? :(

lol.. and has infokiosk got his answer in this clutter..?! :P
