@Mohit: Did you get a 10 digit number (9xxxx xxxxx) for your connection..?

No. I got a 7 digit number.

1Mbps unlimited for 650 is damn good only problem is EVDO speed highly varies from place to place.

BTW please tell it gives shared ip right ? what difference does shared ip makes ?

No idea. Right now everything works fine. Utorrent shows the desired ports to be open and forwarded properly too. Torrents working fine though the speed is not as promised. It is as good as a 256-300 kbps mobile broadband connection at present. Also speeds keep fluctuating but it has never been slow till now.

Ahhh well I am returning mine connection. It sucks plain and simple nowadays. Going for Reliance.

Why? And also how much money do you get back if you return? And can you sell the EVDO card to somebody else after surrendering your connection?

@vvikas: I don't think it is a shared IP. My IP is 117.254.xxx.xxx. It is a dynamic IP though.

uTorrents and RS downloads are not a problem. Using a download manager like Orbit will increase the speed considerably.

P.S: This has been my experience with EVDO so far. I had taken the connection in October 2008. At that time, my area just had CDMA 1x coverage and speeds were mediocre. Since May 2009, EVDO network was enabled in my area, and speeds shot up. It was so consistent and good that since July-Aug 2009, I had surrendered my institution's Airtel BB connection, and am now solely dependant on EVDO for my internet access.

^^ when you say utorrents are not a problem are you able to get your ports forwarded consistently without problem?

Can you comment about the ping times/packet loss statistics of your connection? (just try pingtest.net)

I would like to compare the 2nd with an airtel connection

That's a change!

When I got EvDO, Rapidshare and Bt were not possible due to shared IP and blocked ports.

Downloaded a random torrent from demonoid just a little while ago to show the speeds. ;)

@Mohit : i am a EVDO user for a long time now.

EVDO signal strength : the number of bars in top right corner of program window, is vital.

I recently suffered a lot from low surfing speeds, i could not find anything faulty with my system / modem or anything,

I contacted the BSNL office, they came to my premises and checked the situation remained the same.

Thereafter I forced them to followup my case for almost 10 days, and ultimately the reason came to be congestion of two signals.

Reprogramming only helps if your concerned exchange programming has changed.

I am getting constant speeds of 800 - 900 Kbps minimum.

But it being wireless upload speeds are horrible.

Roaming is by default activated if you are paying 650/- as the rental, if you pay 550/- as rental then roaming is not activated.

If your number is 201**** then try to call 201-1111 it is generally EVDO help line in every city.

hope it helped.

Best way is to try and find speeds in various locations in your city or area, if you have laptop.

All these is only applicable if your dialer software shows EVDO not 1X.

Yes. Upload speeds are bad. But still, in some cases you get good upload speeds. I have managed to keep my BwT ratio above 2.0 for quite some time now. It is the same case with Asia Torrents. However, the same cannot be said about BTjunkie or Demonoid. It is just fortunate that both are ratio-free. :)

@varkey: The revised tariff has been put on hold as of now. It is very much possible that the tariff would be revised in the immediate future, but rumours are that this revision would be done along with the upgrade to Rev A technology which can provide speeds upto 3.1Mbps.

Thats great news. My friends were planning to take one connection. :) :) What is the cost of the modem? Is it Rs 2400?

The problem with BSNL EVDO, Photon+ etc are the variation in Signal and speed.
With Photon+ I get about 250-300 kBps consistently at Cochin, whereas in Chennai I just get max 100 kBps. The dialer software shows full signal both in Cochin and Chennai but the speeds vary.

@Medpal

Thanks a lot for the info. I am getting decent reception in my house and the program shows EVDO. Speeds are decent enough right now.

@bubblez

Yes, torrents and rapidshare work fine. No problem with the ports as of now.

@varkey

Cost of a new modem is around 4200/-.

@OP Mine crib with BSNL EVDO:

1. Initially the speeds were good, but nowadays they aren't.

2. For new year I had been to Junnar about 100km away from Pune, there Reliance Netconnect rocked, however the BSNL EVDO won't even step down to CDMA, there was no connection. Also the connection didnt work in Goa.

So for me, its bye bye BSNL EVDO.
