Me and my friend are trying to make a LAN b/w 2 comps (for first time). Both are running Windows XP SP2.

(We share a broadband DSL connection by me plugging to the ethernet port of the modem and he uses the USB port)

Now we want to LAN the comps basically to share files. When we try to connect it now, the connection shows fine in his comp but my comp shows limited or no connectivity. We cant see ourselves on the networl. we tried sharing folders and drives but nothing happens. We have properly run the network wizard and set up the connections on both connections...

Any ideas?

are u both able to ping eachothers' systems?

which type of cable are u using..?

if one system shows connection established...the other shd also be

IIIly if one system shows conn failed..the other system shd be also

wait a min....

lemme get this straight....u are setting up lan using ETH cables...or thru using the modem/router?

oh.. sorry guys... don't confuse it with the internet connection/modem etc...

We are trying to LAN via ETH cables!

( I am a total noob @ networking :P )

I found out that my DSL modem can actually work as a hub (or is it called router?) for our LAN. And right now we are connected. We can ping each other! (He is 192.168.1.2 and I am at 192.168.1.3 and the defaut gateway is at 192.168.1.1) But we cant see ourselves on the network. As in when I run \\hiscompname ..its now happening. Nor can we see each other when we look at "show comps on this network".

you need to go aheah and start the home&office network setup wizard located in network connection properties at the left side of that window only.
