Hi,

this is a strange case. my lappy was was idle from past 10days or so, stored nice into laptop bag as I as out of town. now when I tried to use. it does not turn ON. simple there is no power. no activity on screen, even the status indicator LEDs(charging,Power,HDD etc) don't work. previously it was working fine. Don't know what the hell happened.

* Checked all power connections

* Plugged into different power source

* plugged directly without a battery but it does not turn on

Any idea on possible reasons?

Is there a power activity indicator on the adapter? Is it turning on? Probably the battery has no charge and the adapter fails to power it properly?

seems like moisture. keep it plugged in for an hour or two and it should probably start.

that might be the reason, its rainy season - its humid. And It was stored in closed almirah . How can I be sure?

There is no led on power adapter but It turns out. My dad also owns similar Lenovo laptop, so I tried using his charger(Offcourse i checked, it was same wattage + same current output). it still does not come to life.

Also, the laptop has a charging indicator which glows when its charging even if its powered off. that too does not glow.

Damn, never knew moisture can be some dangerous:|

Any ideas, how to fix this?

btw, Laptop model is:

lenovo IBM ThinkPad R61i 7732-7DC

1.5GB RAM

80GB HDD etc

At the OP , as stated , it is possible that moisture is causing this. Keep it in the open for a few hours / Keep it plugged in. It should start soon...

LOL you thought moisture is dangerous? Then check this out - my friend who recently got himself a Acer 5740G left his laptop close to an open window on top of his bed and was lashed by heavy rains. Although the display was closed, the water managed to get inside between the gap and he was quite paranoid for a couple of days and did not bother powering it on. It worked fine when he switched it on after 2 days although he still is worried if something might conk off later. :P

In your case, to get rid of moisture place a bag or 2 of silica gel inside the shelf where you store the laptop or the bag. Silica gel is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture. :P

As most people above suggested, moisture could be one of the main cause.

Try the following before you send it for repair.
1- Remove the power connector , the battery and hold the power button down for 15 seconds. Now replace the battery and power connector and try powering it on.
2- Your laptops RAM could have gone Kaput or got unseated, try reseating them(after removing power connection and battery) once more a bit firmly, if it is still not working try and check with your dad's laptop RAM.(check compatiblity before doing this).

If all else fails the service guys are there :)..

Peace~

I dont know if it helps but remove the battery and plug in the charger and then try to start the lappy.
Read the post properly DC. :P

On dope? :P

*BUMP*

Same problem resurfaced again:|

This time laptop was lying idle on desk for 3-4days. Earlier I got rid of moisture by keeping it in sunlight but there is no sunlight(here, its been raining real nice, Humidity: 100%). currently, I have laptop plugged in AC power with battery pack physically removed. And fortunately, charging LED is glowing. When I try to power-on the machine, it comes to life for 2-3seconds & then goes dead. After that -- pressing the power button any number of times, has no effect. It remains dead for next few hours after which this cycle keeps repeating itself. I need to use the machine for a presentation.

So,

should I use hair dyer to get rid of moisture? or some other tips? need that thing working by any means:|

rolled over the hot air using hair dryer for 2-3min, didn't put it for long as things were getting heated(was scared of damaging/melting internal circuits:ashamed:). Tried to power it on, it did turn on only to go dead again after 1-2second. I don't think CPU fan spinned because I didn't hear it.

Is it really the moisture? or Should I try something else like --> Remove RAM sticks, clean them & putting them back?

PS: I find it very strange that machine working perfectly before, can be rendered into such unusable state if not used for 3-4days. Odd!

[EDIT]

Used the dryer a bit more & its working now:hap2:

Wrap your Lappy in a piece of cloth and put it in a 'BORI' of rice for 1 day, and use the sack of rice 'bori' later just for storage till the rainy season gets over :hap2: . This is the BEST way to dry styff without opening them. This is a tried and tested method for Mumbai :cool2: .

All the electronic products are made to work in a humidity range upto 95%.

^^ I'd rather use silica gel. Rice has too much dust which is not good.

@OP

If the problems are not being resolved by whatever you could try, I'd better give it for service. Don't go & try things what anyone recommends. You might end up damaging your lappy.

I don't find "hair dryer" a good idea. A lot of static is generated.

Availability of silica gel is a very big concern. To dry out the internals you need to have at least 4 bags of 'unused' silica gel. Hence I recommended a sack of rice :P .

You're right not using a hair dryer, it's one of the most easiest way(read espionage) one can conk off electronic gadgets.

not odd considering that moisture can go on the dry soldering joints even if left unused for a day.
Next time wrap it in a plastic bag and then wrap that bag in another bag to be sure.
I've started doing the same to most of the unused hardware i have lying around. Wrap them up nice and tight. I've seen an old casio calculator innards catch rust due to this moisture since it was lying around without a battery for years in a cupboard. I hate the rainy season.
