Laptops Laptop for 30K

None of the lappys below 35k comes with a DVD writer. Also are you talking about desktop Celeron processors ? The laptop celeron processors are the same as Centrino with the only difference being 1 Mb instead of 2 MB cache & without sidestep support which means slightly more battery life. Else the processors are the same.

Furthur, the Centrinos below 40k, come with 400 Mhz FSB and DDR 400 ram, while the Celeron processors come with DDR 2 533 Mhz Ram and 533 Mhz FSB to furthur reduce the performance gap.

Wrong! I know of a HCL Centrino laptop with DVDRW for ~34k (plus taxes).

Centrino is NOT a processor. Centrino is a technology. Intel certifies a laptop as a Centrino Mobile Technology laptop if and only if the laptop has the following three components:

1. Intel Pentium M processor

2. Intel 855GM (its obsolete now) / 915GM chipset

3. Intel Wireless LAN

Wrong again! with Intel Speedstep, the processor underclocks to lower speed consuming less power and thus saving on battery back-up. Since Celeron-M processors dont support speedstep, they run at their full speed and consuming full power, thus eating on battery back-up. In essence, u'll get lower back-up on a Celeron-M laptop than a faster Pentium-M laptop.

Not necessarily! the type of RAM supported on the laptop is decided by the chipset employed and not the processor! Heck, there are laptops with Intel Core Solo 533FSB processors, Intel 945GM chipset, DDR2 RAM, SATA HDD, Centrino Duo certified, with DVD-RW and yet cost ~35k!

P.S: For the prices I mentioned above, both models come with Linux OS preloaded.

Oops, made a few mistakes, thanks for pointing them out ! :ashamed:
But come on you can make out from my post I ment the Pentium M will have more battery life since it has Sidestep and not the Celeron.

And about the less than 35k laptop, 34 + taxes will be 35k only (4% vat + 5.5% octroi). I merly mentioned this as 6pack wanted a laptop with Centrino and DVD Writer for 30k max which was not possible. I enquired a lot before buying my laptop in Mumbai and I saw a few HCL dealers here.

The ones I did see were selling me a Centrino (with 855 GM chipset) for 34k ! They had all obsolete models here in Mumbai. I guess they havent sold the old stock and dont want to order the latest HCL laptops.

Also at 35k, you can get a Compaq V3000 series with Celeron 1.6 512 Mb ddr2 533, 60 Gb hdd and DVD - Writer and will have a better resale value than HCL.

hehehe, i keep saying this time n time again, but will say it again....
most 1st time laptop buyers get enamored by the large screen on a 15.4" or even 17" but when the initial charm wears off, the large size and weight become a major PITA :P
what i usually recommend to ppl looking for a large screen is this:
buy the smallest machine in your budget (14" fits in urs) and pick a 17" LCD maybe a month or two down the line....when u need mobilty, the light weight and size helps...when you are @ur desk, just hook the monitor ....
and thus get the best of both worlds :D
Where the hell were you when I bought mine. :@ I have been looking (since past few months) to dispose off my 15" laptop and get a 12" one with a LCD.

Yeah , the chap never mentioned it to me either when he was giving me suggestions for buying my first laptop and so I ended up buying a 15.4" laptop ! Thankfully I managed to give that to my dad for a desktop replacement.
