Laptop for 800$

My sis who is in US wants to buy a laptop for under 800$, if you guys come across any good deals, please inform me. Also give me some suggestions...
 
One of my friends works in dell in sales here in India... I will ask him and let you know if he can get you a good deal on the lappy... I remember once he sold something real cheap to his relative in US...
 
Dell quite often has huge discount sales on their laptops, keep an eye out for one of these. Sites like www.dealsofamerica.com or the sorts keep a regular tab on the Dell deals.

Looks like they have something on even now as well - there's a laptop for 399$ :P

Hmm They do have an Inspiron 6000 for 749$. But I was looking for an AMD based system ;) with ATI gfx chipset (For the 2d quality).
 
Hehe, then Dell is out of the question !

But seriously , the Pentium M's are a better choice when it comes to Lappys :)

The tigerdirect link had a refurbished laptop, hence thats outta question. I have shortlisted a few laptops if you guys can comment on them it will be great. Also I would like to know how is their build quality, after sales service etc....

All the Intel products have integrated GMA 900 gfx, somehow I am not too sure of the SIS's 2d quality as I have a comp with SIS mirage gfx at home and it wont play any D3d or OpenGL games. Games though is not a criteria, I want atleast 512mb RAM, a decent proccy, and decent d quality.

An X700 seems enticing, but overall I feel the AMD deal is better, what are your takes on the same.

Get a Pentium M rather than an AMD based system. The difference on a Laptop is tremendous. Anyways, those deals dont look bad.

Dont go with Celerons. They are too slow. I just played around with the Laptops my dads office bought from Compaq, they bought 6 of em. All of em same model, i dunt remeber which 1. IT SUCKED!

As topic reads, price. I did rather go for a celeron based system with 512 megs ram, then a P4m system with 256 mb RAM. Same for AMD they are relatively cheaper,
 
^ But you do get the Inspiron 6000 with a Pentium-M and 512MB RAM for less than 800$ - atleast with the Dell offers I showed you yesterday (think its still on)

Apart from that there's the Inspiron 2200 for 849$, where you get all "upgrades" free - upgrades include upgrade to 512MB RAM, DVD-writer, wireless, etc.

When it comes to Laptops, Intel's Pentium M is a different breed altogether and definately a worthy consider even for AMD fanboys! ;) The Athlons are more power-hungry.
 
^^ Yep you are correct, but AMD 64 Turion I feel eats less power. But one of the main reason to go with AMD is the ATI gfx chipset, Intel's integrated gfx looks awful in 2d....

But nowadays, Intel do not ship their graphics chipsets in laptops:) , rather they ship something like NVIDIA 6800 Go chips:hap2: . And trust me, Pentium M's takes 10 times less power than AMD Turion. They don't yet have a strong presence. Most of the Turion based Laptops produces enormous amount of heat :food3: and the battery life is very poor.:no:. That's why you don't find too many AMD turion laptops. But if price is your concern, then AMD is the choice:cool2:
 
actually celeron Ms are not bad at all...the only difference between them and the pentiu-Ms are :

1- no speed step (so approx 15% lower battery life)

2- 1 MB L2 cache compared to 2 on the dothan PMs ...actually th eoriginal Pentium Ms (Banias that used to sell like 6 mnths ago also had 1MB L2 cache)

So Celeron Ms are actually the best bang for the buck for some1 looking for a budget laptop

QFT! That 950$ laptop with the Celeron M looks like the best deal.
 
^^ actually if she's not into gaming, what's the need to spend the extra cash on a X700....

A friend recently picked a decent Celeron M based sysatem (Compaq M2002) for 30K + anoother 1.3 K for a 512 MB upgrade....

Now if that is avalble for ~700USD here, expecte to pay 600-650 if you look for bargains in the US

On a side not, I've been concurrewntly using a celeron M and a Pentium M based laptop for the last sevral months, and I find no perceptible difference between the general responsieness of the two systems....In terms of start up time, snapiness, switching b/w windows etc.

Only one thing where I find a diference is while video encoding when ripping dvd's to divx

The Pentium M takes ~15% Less time....but having said that, I must also point out that DVD ripping or video encoding is something I start when I'll be away from the PC so that it is over y the time i come back.....
 
^^ Thanx Superczar, I will look for a Celery M deal. The performance diff is not that huge, found that, and yes she doesnt game hence an X700 is a waste. Unless I get a better deal on a Sempron 3000+ celery is the way to go...
 
^^ BTW I believe Semprons are huge power drainers and heat up in a laptop.....

I strongly subscribe to the viewpoint that AMDs for desktop and Dothans for notebooka re the current best choices
 
dont know if its only me or happens the same to most ppl ...

all the 3-4 amd laptops i laid my hands on .. overheats (certainly lap warmers) and relatively low batt life ( i agree with super ^^)

if she is not into gaming ... a geforce mobility or ati mobility will be enough ...

so my suggestion is: celeron M with 512 or more ram and 60 or more hdd

there are some in newegg.com around the budget :)
