Laptop for the elderly

Hello,

I am thinking of buying a laptop for my parents. Both are on the other side of 60s.

Budget - ~25K
Primary Usage - Websurfing, Skyping
SIze and Weight - Larger the screen the better. >= 15' (or should I look for a smaller screen?). The laptop would mostly be at home but would prefer a lighter laptop.
Any brand preference - Would prefer a brand that is more reliable and has a good A.S.S
Other consideration - Actually need a basic laptop, nothing fancy. An older/cheaper processor would do with about 2gb RAM and 250gb HDD. Would need Windows. Preferably one with a good inbuilt speaker.

Why am I not looking for a desktop? - No place to keep a desktop + portability may come in handy.

Considering it is for my parents who are not very techno-savvy, any suggestions/advice on what I should be looking for would be appreciated.

Danke!

This model suits your needs well. Only -ve is the lack of pre-installed windows 7.

If you need windows 7 then there are Toshiba, Compaq, MSI, Acer and Samsung models in the <25k segment. But this Lenovo model has got good reviews and is cheaper than the rest.

I would strongly recommend an ipad for your purposes. Only downside is that flash enabled sites wouldn't work on Safari. Skype would be relatively easy to use on an ipad than on a laptop.

^ Agree with @Nomad. Am a bit surprised no one recommended it. Unless budget is a constraint, the iPad is best suited for these purposes.

Thanks for all the suggestion guys and sorry for responding so late, was away from the internet for the longest time.

iPad is a good choice but keeping in mind that it is for not-so-tech-savvy senior citizens, I would rather stick to a conventional laptop that wont intimidate them. The Toshiba option looks good, I am not sure if they'd ever look beyond the usual. Same goes for using Ubuntu (BTW, I am looking at having an Ubuntu laptop for myself).

Thanks again!

That is the exact reason why the iPad was suggested. You can do a simple test. Give a total non techie person a laptop and an iPad. See which one they adapt to quick. Devices like the iPad makes things easier!

maybe you have a point...worth a shot but a bit expensive :(

Wait a few months windows 8 will be out in 2012 and you can have a full featured os in an tablet at 1/2 the price.windows 8 is made for tablets.it is easiier and more natural to navigate by touch than keyboard touchpad especialy the ederly

Thanks!

Spoke to my folx about the options, they seem to prefer a laptop but I guess it's more technofear than anything. Will introduce them to tabs when they visit me in a month or so, let's see if they take to it.

I too hope laptop is best for all purposes, tables are for tech savvy generation, a laptio can be fixed by any roadside computer repair shop and huge lot of applications and usages. say no to tablets for parents, but u can sure consider a 11 inch netbook.

ipad wins hands down, my parents prefer opening the ipad to check mails compared to the hassle of laptops, windows log in, opening firefox and what not.....

will definitely recommend the ipad.my dad didnt used to use the pc much but totally digs the ipad.its so damn simple and fun.
