Hi guys

a friend's 13 month Compaq lappie's lcd got an internal hairline crack and the lcd's gone. a shopkeeper said it'd cost 20k to fix it :O

Ok, so could anyone tell me the cheapest fix-it option?

1)Does anyone know where in chennai could get it fixed cheaper

2)Is getting an externmal monitor for it a better option (cheaper).

[and pls dont suggest to get a netbook]

TIA!

Look for some other laptop repair shops. You can usually get screen repaired for around 10k or so at most places.

Hmm yeah, keeping the external monitor option aside.

@Techie: yeah, the official cost would eb 20k, bu the shopkeeper said he could get it fixed for 12.5k

Does anyone know where one could get it for cheaper in chennai?

Totally Depends on initial cost of lappy.

Option 1 will cost you min 10K. (Not Sure about longevity/durability of repair job.)

Option 2 - cheap but no portability - as mentioned earlier by board member.

Well, if you're spending that much, you might as well try and go the DIY route. A replacement LCD will probably run you about 5K (will probably be a fair bit cheaper as yours is not an IPS). Instructions for most laptops can be found by googling around. For example, thinkpads.com is the resource for all thinkpad. I'm sure there might be one for Presarios as well.

+1 to that , go the DIY way , incase there is a bump in the way then u can approach a pro and give him the material and let him charge the labour / skill charges and do it......reference links for u to get cheap lcd's....am sure 'KMD' can be of utmost help here...

Thanks idea and gforce.

@hanzy: if it were my lappie it'd go ahead, but its a friend's yaar :s

Anyway, a friend asked around, found a shop that'd do it for 8k with 3 months warranty.
he's also trying to to see if we can source the lcd from hp through a contact and ask the shop guys to fix it (if its cheaper)
