hi stick since u said u need a lappy with XP or 2000 1GB RAM should be ok go with the Dell Vostro 1510,which comes with DOS ,and since hes gonna use it for internet usage the below config should be ok with him

dude acer build quality is sad and abt compaq the service is not tat great ,my bro has a compaq had tough time with the tech support guys to replace HDD ,i know dell is bad but the vostro line is good and overall its good tan Acer or compaq
 
i dont know abt Sony Viao ,HP is totally pathetic in service(compaq and HP are one ,correct me if i am wrong;) ),Toshiba heard its decent coz its in India by HCL,i did order a Toshiba waiting to get hands on it :D

Dell is as good as good gets..:p

Really..go for dell vostro..Vostro N series come without Os..
Also, since vostro's are all black, even after years, they'l look the same.. even the touch pad doesnt fade..
Battery can be upgraded to 9 cell..if you want higher battery, go with onboard graphics..
