I have an old Sony Vaio FRV series laptop which I use as a standby from time to time. Off late, the laptop has started hanging quite a bit and once it hangs up, it would not reboot. A little jiggling of the machine and it reboots on the next attempt. There are no other problems with the machine and it runs fine WHEN its running. Is this a problem with the HDD or something else? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

this type of problem is generally associated with RAM or HDD or video section or corrupt OS .

I'd start with physical inspection of RAM (clean , change slots) , testing of RAM using utilities ,

checking HDD , repairing / reinstalling the OS ...
